FL Div 1: Spoils shared in Dunshaughlin

Dunshaughlin 1-12 Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-12

The game sparked into life early on when Sean O'Neil broke through the Ashbourne defence and was clean through on goal however the Ashbourne keeper Shane Brady pulled off a superb save to deny him, but the Gourmet Food Parlour sponsored Dunshaughlin didn’t let the chance go to waste. Aaron Murphy firing over a well-taken two-pointer that set the tone and John McDonagh split the posts with a fine left-footed effort following superb high fielding effort from Charlie O’Connor at midfield.

Luke Mitchell then opened his account with a well-struck 45, pushing Dunshaughlin into an early 0-4 to 0-0 lead after just 10 minutes of play.

Mitchell again added to the scoreboard with a fortuitous goal that gave Dunshaughlin breathing space, but Ashbourne responded quickly, registering four unanswered points in the next ten minutes to close the gap to just three just before the break, however, Mitchell struck again, slotting home Dunshaughlin’s second two-pointer of the evening. Ashbourne finished the half with a pointed free to keep themselves in contention.

The second half opened with Ashbourne on the front foot, registering a well-struck two-pointer bringing them right back into the contest. Dunshaughlin answered through full forward Aaron Murphy, who hit a tidy left-footed point, followed by another from Luke Mitchell to keep their noses in front.

The sideline made a change, introducing Ciaran Sheridan for Sean O'Neil.

Murphy, relentless throughout, forced his way through the Ashbourne defence to register his penultimate point, but the visitors soon responded with a goal of their own, cutting the deficit to just one. Ashbourne’s number 14 Michael Deegan then split the posts to bring the sides level.

After a couple of wides, the visitors finally nudged ahead with a single point. But Dunshaughlin hitting back, when Aaron Murphy now turning provider as he picked out Adam Hanley, who fisted the ball over the bar to level the game once again

Then came a touch of class: Aaron Murphy, curled over a beautiful score with the outside of his boot to push Dunshaughlin ahead. But Ashbourne weren’t finished they tacked on another point to draw level once more.

Just when it looked like the spoils would be shared, referee Keith sheerin awarded a free to Dunshaughlin, the wing forward John McDonagh claimed what looked like the winning point. But in the dying moments, Ashbourne edged one more score onto the board to ensure both sides took home a hard-earned point.

Next up for this side is a drive to the seaside on, hopefully, another sunny Saturday evening as they take on St Colmcilles in the 4th round of the league at 6pm on April 12th.
