Rathkenny's Max McKenna

The visitors came away with the spoils in this J M Food Services, Football League Division 2, Round 2 match played in Rathkenny last Saturday afternoon, March 22nd.

Rathkenny 0-02 Moynalvey 1-07

Referee Martin Dawson Reddy threw up the ball just on 2pm as the rain and wind made conditions tricky for both sides. The opening nine minutes saw efforts kicked wide or short on both sides as multiple turnovers made it a hard watch.

The scoreboard operator was finally called upon with nine and a half minutes played as the visitors popped over the opening score from their right half forward. The visitors added two further points on thirteen and fourteen minutes from the left full forward. The same player added his third score of the half with a free on eighteen and a half minutes to extend the lead to four points. It proved to be the final score of the half as each side gave up possession in the tricky conditions and kicked nine further wides or balls that ended short in the remaining twelve minutes. Rathkenny 0-00 Moynalvey 0-04.

Rathkenny made some positional switches and brought on Aaron Johnson and Mark Byrne at the break. Moynalvey got the all-important score of the game in the thirty-fifth minutes as they won possession and quickly passed through the Rathkenny rearguard. The final pass found their full forward who palmed to the net from the edge of the square and the gap was now seven points.  With ten minutes of the second half played the scoreboard read 1-6 to no score as Moynalvey had added two further points from the left full forward.

Rathkenny finally found their range when Eoghan Heavey popped over as we approached forty-four minutes. Five further wides between the sides showed the conditions were hard to handle. The visitors sent over their last score through the left full forward on fifty-two minutes. Rathkenny kept plugging away and finally got a second point when Max McKenna sent over a free with fifty-seven minutes gone as the game drifted to a finish.
