Seneschalstown 0-14 St. Peter’s, Dunboyne 3-14
Seneschalstown suffered a third Feis Cup defeat in as many outings on the Rooske Road in Dunboyne on Saturday afternoon. Despite a vastly improved showing in the second half, the damage was done before the break as the home side marched to an eleven point half-time advantage after a strong second quarter showing.
The St. Peter’s men were quickest out of the blocks and kicked a two pointer straight from the throw-in and followed up with a regular white flag almost instantly. Seneschalstown did settle into the game shortly afterwards and Éamon Finnegan kicked a free to get Seneschasltown on the scoreboard in the second minute. He added another free a few minutes later after Seneschalstown forced a turnover deep in Dunboyne territory before referee Liam Reddy spotted a foul.
Seneschalstown’s first score from play arrived in the sixth minute after Aran Carey hoisted over an effort which hung in the air before eventually dropping inside the left hand post. However this was as good as it got for Seneschalstown as Dunboyne reeled off 1-09 without reply, which included a couple of two point efforts as they took over for the remainder of the half. Seneschalstown didn’t score again until the 25th minute when Alan Mulvany kicked a free which was brought forward by 50 metres before Collie Scanlon got on the end of a move to pop over another score to leave the visitors 1-13 to 0-05 down at the interval.
After making a few positional switches which included the introduction of Niall Hickey among others, Seneschalstown produced a much better second half performance despite conceding a goal just minutes after the resumption. Another substitute, Cian Hosie got the scoreboard rolling once again for the Yellow Furze outfit when he landed a two point free from out on the right hand side at the clubhouse end.
Alan Mulvany added another point from play and even though Dunboyne answered at the other end, it was the men in blue that continued to have most of the ball and scoring chances in the second half. A 40th minute free from Cian Hosie was followed by a ten minute scoreless spell which was ended when Eamon Finnegan flashed the ball inches over the crossbar when he turned in the large square. Another two point effort, this time from Cathal Hickey continued the positive work from Seneschalstown in the second period even if the result was already beyond doubt.
A third Dunboyne goal, against the run of play added a gloss for the home side but Seneschalstown finished with the final two points from an Alan Mulvany free and centre back Cormac Carolan.
Seneschalstown will hope they produce more of the second half performance in the upcoming League as they now turn attention to the first round against Ballinabrackey on March 15th.
