St Brigid’s 0-23 Carnaross 2-11

St Brigid’s and Carnaross met for the first of their 3 guaranteed meetings this year in Round 2 of the Tailteann Cup with the Ballinacree men earning the first spoils.

Playing with the aid of the elements in the first half, Carnaross raced into an early lead. Paddy McDermott enjoyed a fantastic tussle with Michael Flood over the course of the encounter. McDermott converted a free to register the first score of the game before doubling the lead with a fine 45. Darragh O’Reilly and Paddy Morris opened their accounts before Morris had to be removed due to injury. Brigids kept in touch with three frees of their own. Darragh O’Reilly raised the first green flag of the contest by rounding the keeper after a fine delivery from a Charlie Murphy sideline. Brigid’s were almost in for a goal of theirown but McNiffe reacted quickest to intercept a long ball over the top. McDermott knocked over a fine score from play before landing another placed ball. Paddy became the first Carnaross player to land a two pointer just before referee Raymond Tynan blew the half time whistle.

The second half was a different story for the Ross men however. After landing the first score through the on form McDermott, Brigid’s hit a purple patch landing 10 unanswered scores. During this time, Carnaross lost Adam Kerins to injury. While the wind definitely picked up, Brigid’s were the sharper team and simply couldn’t miss, including a couple of two pointers. Captain on the day, Cormac Yore, kick started a Ross response with a superb individual goal, finishing low to the bottom corner. Shane O’Reilly added another point as the Carnaross rearguard regrouped. With 3 points in it, Carnaross had a penalty chance waved away, but the dye was cast. Brigids saw out the remaining few minutes after their barn storming third quarter. The midfield duo of Oisín Yore and Luke Gillic fought gallantly throughout the hour with the two O’Reillys winning numerous dirty possessions but ultimately the barren 20minute spell after half time was too costly.

The final group game sees Carnaross host Nobber on Sunday March 2nd at 10.30am
