Camogie: Royals claim Leinster Under 16B Shield Cup

February 17, 2025

Meath joint Captains Lauren Donegan and Ellen Murray receive the Leinster U16 B camogie championship cup at Netwatch Centre of Excellence in Carlow

Meath 0-9 Carlow 0-3

Meath U-16 Camogie squad travelled to Netwatch Centre of Excellence in Carlow on Sunday to take on the host County in the Leinster B Shield Final. The opening quarter seen both sides set out their stall in what would prove to be a physically hard fought and excellent Camogie match played out in very chilly conditions.

An opening point from Carlow was quickly cancelled out by Meath full forward Saoirse Meagher (Clann na nGael). The Meath defence led exceptionally well by player of the match Séamim Shaw (Killyon) snuffed out all efforts by Carlow to build any meaningful attack.

Brilliant defending by Sarah Heffernan at full back and wing half backs Holly Reilly and Grace Hogan provided Meath with a platform to build going forward.

An Ellen Murray (Trim) free followed by a Faye Govern (Dunderry) point gave Meath a 0-3 to 0-2 half time lead against the wind.

Meath took full advantage of a second half wind to extend their lead to 0-7 to 0-3 with three points from Ellen Murray (2 frees, 1- 45) and a super point from centre forward Faye Govern.

The game developed into a real arm wrestle as it entered the final quarter.

Ruby Grehan, Aoife Dunne and Lucy McKenna were introduced for Meath and had a huge influence. The brilliant Ellen Murray closed out the game with two well taken points.

Joint Captains Lauren Donegan (Wolfe Tones) and Ellen Murray accepted the cup on behalf of the squad.
