Jim Mullery bade farewell to County Board duties at the County Board Convention on Monday 9th December after serving Meath County Board for 12 years. Jim received a Standing Ovation last night from all in attendance and it would be remiss of Slane GFC if we did not recognise the greatness of this man and how proud we are as a club, that he is indeed one of our own.
Jim arrived in Co. Meath in the late 70’s, coming all the way from his native County Wexford where he had been a playing member with the Hoareswood club. Jim played both Football and Hurling with Hoarswood and indeed had won a minor hurling championship medal with them before leaving Wexford. His love of the small ball travelled with Jim to Meath and he found himself swinging a hurl with the Kilmessan club where he went on to win a Junior and a Senior championship in 1977 and 1978 respectively.
Jim settled in Carrickdexter in Slane with Theresa and they went on to have four children Paul, James, Eoghan and Helen. The Slane club was competing in the Senior championship in the 80s and 90s and Paul and Eoghan donned the blue and white and it was at this stage that Jim put his shoulder to the wheel for Slane. Jim’s first involvement was in helping out with some of the underage teams but he then moved on to the committee and went on to serve in virtually every club officer position in the club culminating in his years as Club Secretary and then Club Chairman. Slane lost its Senior status in 1999 and went through some difficult years as we slid down the grades’ but Jim Mullery was always a workhorse in terms of trying to steady the ship and encourage teams and players to continue to compete. After many years as club chairman, Jim decided to help out at county board level, but still assisted the club’ particularly as club insurance officer where he has helped many Slane players with injuries and in difficult circumstances over the years.
His first role with the County Board was that of County Development officer where he assisted many clubs in availing and preparing for Development Grants. Jim then moved on to Co Board Treasurer and has only stepped back to assistant Treasurer supporting Gene Smith of Nobber for the past 2 years. Slane have returned to being a competitive club at adult and underage levels in Meath in recent years and it has been heart-warming to see Jim being able to present trophies to Slane teams…..a nice reward for a man that has given so much to his club, his community and his adopted county. It has been said so many times to Slane GFC officers in Meath GAA circles that Jim Mullery is an absolute Gentleman and through all the years of serving with Jim, Slane GFC can wholeheartedly endorse this statement.
Go raibh míle maith agat Jim as d’obair a rinne tú tríd na blianta.
Tá gach duine anseo i mBaile Shláine an-bhrodúil asat!
