Loughcrew Gaels Gaeil Colmcille's Daragh Shine

Ratoath 3-10 Loughcrew Gaels/Gaeil Colmcille 5-16

A blustery Sunday morning in Ratoath on a pitch in very good condition for late October. Ratoath won the toss, choose to play with the wind and getting off to a quick start with three points from play before Loughcrew Gaels Gaeil Colmcille through Andrew Gormley registered their first score on the five-minute mark. This was followed by a lengthy delay as Kit Og Lynch went down after an awkward collision and having to be stretchered off with a nasty shoulder injury.

Ratoath picked off the next score but then Loughcrew Gaels Gaeil Colmcille upped the work rate, battling for everything and doing what needs to be done when you are against a strong wind. Man of the match Darren O’Higgins who created havoc in the rough conditions skipped through the Ratoath defence for a well worked goal to tie the match. Ratoath stretched their lead to five points just before the interval, but O’Higgins rallied off two points from play to leave the half time score at 1:09 to 1:06 in favour of the home side.

With the wind in their backs and only three points down it was Loughcrew Gaels Gaeil Colmcille’s game to lose and by the 45th minute the game was all wrapped up with Loughcrew Gaels Gaeil Colmcille scoring 2:07 unanswered including two goals from Daire Shine (penalty) and O’Higgins before Ratoath got onto the score sheet with their own goal from play.

The final score of the game came from James McDonnell with a goal from close range. All in a good day’s work, points on the board, Ratoath were understrength and there will be stiffer challenges to come.
