Dunsany 1-5 St. Vincents 0-7

After losing nine finals since 1972 Dunsany finally got their hands on the Meath Junior Football Championship title with this one point win over St. Vincents at a stormy Pairc Tailteann. When these two met in the 2021 decider the Ardcath men came away with a 1-4 to 0-6 victory.

Both teams struggled to cope with the conditions provided by Storm Ashley. Paddy McGill had the Ardcath men on the scoreboard first but on the 11th minute Dunsany got a crucial goal, Cian O’Sullivan finishing in a crowded small square. Michael McIvor and Eoin Harkin traded points and Dunsany were two in front at the end of the first quarter. The conditions favoured St. Vincents and points from McIvor, Jack Byrne and Conor O’Brien gave them a 0-5 to 1-1 interval lead.

The second half was all about Eoin Harkin. The former county man came to life in the third quarter registering four points to give his team control. Amazingly his fifth point of the game on the 45th minute was to be Dunsany’s last score. Gary Tuite narrowed the lead and when the same player sent over a free with three minutes remaining extra time was on the cards. Dunsany were not to be denied this time and after some heroic defending referee Keith Sheerin blew the final whistle to spark scenes that have been rarely seen at the Navan venue.

After the game a pround Dunsany man Francis Flynn presented the Peter McDermott Cup to joint captains Eoin Harkin and Shane Brennan.

Dunsany scorers: Eoin Harkin 0-5, Cian O’Sullivan 1-0.

St. Vincents scorers: Michael McIvor and Gary Suite 0-2 each, Jack Byrne, Conor O’Brien and Paddy McGill 0-1 each
