Navan O’Mahony’s 1-06 St Patrick’s 1-10

St Patrick’s came out on top in a low-scoring second attempt at the Premier 2 FC Final, played in front of a large crowd in Paddy O’Brien Park on Wednesday evening.

The visitors opened the scoring to take an early lead and moments later, the upright denied a goal opportunity and the ball was cleared to safety. O’Mahony’s had a number of scoring opportunities, with the first successful one coming  from Christy Dillon in the 6th minute.

Five minutes later, St Pat’s found the net with a kick from the ground. They extended the lead two minutes with a point.  Eoin Joyce converted a free in the 16th minute, but this was soon cancelled by a point from play at the opposite end of the pitch. 

The sides exchanged points for the remainder of the half, with Eoghan Nugent and Jack McConnell raising white flags for O’Mahony’s. Two late points for the Stamullen men saw them go in with a five-point advantage.

Joyce reduced the gap with a free in the eight minute, but St Patrick’s responded well with two pointed frees to leave six between the sides. 

O’Mahony’s were well served in the full back line by strong performances from Craig Nolan, Eimhin Power and Evan Brady, with Louis Collins, Thomas Cully and Ciaran Vaughan working hard further out the pitch.

Another Joyce free left five points in it with fifteen minutes, but O’Mahony’s failed to score for the next ten minutes. During this time, St Patrick’s added a further two. With just over a minute of injury time remaining, substitute Paul Cunningham rattled the St Patrick’s net to reduce the deficit to four. 

Despite landing a number of balls in the danger zone, the St Patrick’s defence proved impenetrable and they managed to keep the O’Mahony’s attack at bay to run out as four point winners.

After the game, County Board and Navan O’Mahony’s official Michael Bennett presented the Cup, along with Mary Tobin from Meath Cleaning Supplies.
