The Dee Rangers squad that defeated Summerhill

Summerhill 1-07 Dee Rangers 3-13

Dee Rangers travelled to Summerhill on Saturday for the third round of the intermediate championship. Dee Rangers were hoping to make it three wins from three, while Summerhill were hoping to record their first victory of this championship campaign.

Both teams created scoring opportunities in the opening ten minutes but their shooting let them down.

On the ten minute mark Niamh Byrne was fouled in the Dee Ranger half back line, she took the free quickly and received the return pass from Grace Durnin, Byrne fisted to her captain Orlaith Sheehy who carried the ball with pace through the centre of the Summerhill defence. As the defenders stepped up to Sheehy she gave the ball over their heads into the path of Bríona Rowe who made no mistake about slotting the ball into the back of the net, recording the first score of the day.

Summerhill kept their cool and their midfielders Aisling McCabe and Sarah Moran worked the ball into their forwards who had great patience and played the ball around until Jenny Rispin eventually slotted it over the bar.

Summerhill were on the attack again and a lovely ball was passed into full forward Aoife Carey who recorded her first score of the day. With only a point between the sides, a stray kick out from Dee Rangers was picked up by Sarah Moran who found Carey. Carey passed a quick ball inside to Robyn Larkin who rounded the keeper and buried the ball into the net.

Dee Rangers steadied themselves and won their kick out, Ellen Carolan charged up the wing and found midfielder Lara O’Neill, who spotted Grace Durnin on the 45. Grace shot and scored a fine point.

Summerhill’s Aisling McCabe was over turned by Emma Halpenny and Lara O’Neill found herself on the ball with plenty of space, she shot from distance and scored a great point from play.

The teams were level 1-02 apiece with twenty minutes gone in the first half.

Summerhill’s Mary Kate Lynch won their kick out and carried the ball up the field, she passed off to Jenny Rispin and continued her run, Rispin returned the ball to Lynch who put the ball over the bar and put her team back in front.

Grace Durnin levelled the game again with a point from play.

On the stroke of half time Sarah Moran, Robyn Larkin and Jenny Rispin combined to get the final score of the half. Leaving the half time score at Summerhill 1-04 Dee Rangers 1-03.

Ella Reilly opened the second half with a pointed free kick for Summerhill.

After a quick ball into the Dee Ranger forward line Bríona Rowe found herself one on one with the keeper again, she made no mistake and put Dee Rangers ahead by one.

Rowe added a point from a free kick to her tally and put the Rangers two points up. Summerhill were quick to respond with an excellent point from play by Ella Reilly.

Wing back Ellen Carolan won the Dee Ranger kick out and took off on a fine solo run, she found herself on the end of the attack and slotted the ball over the bar.

The subsequent goal kick was over turned by Kelly Farrelly who fed the ball into Grace Durnin, credit to the Summerhill keeper Keely Burke who stopped the initial shot but Durnin made sure to score on the second time of asking.

In the next few minutes of the game Bríona Rowe, Lisa Young, Meena McConnell and Eva McConnell recorded a point each from play. Pushing Dee Rangers lead out, 3-9 to 1-6.

Bríona Rowe won the Summerhill kick out and charged forward giving the defender no option but to foul her, she slotted the subsequent free comfortably over the bar.

Summerhill had one last attack which resulted in a free kick which was converted by Ella Reilly. But the Dee Rangers converted a further three points from Eva McConnell, Lara O’ Neill and Bríona Rowe.
