Jun B FC Group B: 'Wood' advance as group winners

September 09, 2024

Kilmainhamwood's Ciaran Doyle

Kilmainhamwood 4-11 Cortown 0-12

Kilmainhamwood headed over to Moynalty on a balmy September afternoon knowing that a 5 point win at least was needed to top Group A of the Junior B Championship.

Kilmainhamwood started stronger with 2 pointed efforts from Rian Stafford. Things took a small turn soon after after and looked like it may be a long afternoon for the Wood when Niall Bennett was lost to injury and Kian Gillespie seen red for a late tackle. Despite these setback Kilmainhamwood kept plugging away at the scoreboard with Rian Stafford tapping over a free and Shane Townley adding a nice pointed shot from play. A big turning point in the half came when Noah Madden broke through a stubborn Cortown defence to rifle the ball to the back of the net to put Kilmainhamwood in a healthy position despite being a man down. Cortown were keeping themselves in the game with accurate free taking from their free takers to keep the pressure on Kilmainhamwood. Rian Stafford hit another goal for the men in white to give a steady lead going in at half time.

Half time; Kilmainhamwood 2-6 Cortown 0-6

Kilmainhamwood started the second half as they finished the first with a brace of points from Rian Stafford again. Niall Conlan found himself free on the wing and cut in to add a point of his own to heap pressure on Cortown who by this stage were reduced to 14 men. With even numbers on the field Kilmainhamwood extended the scoring advantage with a well taken goal from Brian Cassidy. At this stage with Kilmainhamwood having a strong advantage the management team emptied out the bench with Oisin Fagan, Oisin Reilly, Eoin Rooney. To round out a good day at the office Rian Stafford added one more for the road and Noah Madden got a second goal to finish out the game.
