Duggie Dillon keeps possession for St. Michaels during the IFC clash against St. Michaels at Cortown

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-11 St Michaels 0-05

Navan O’Mahony’s put in a strong second half performance to take the points in this second round of the Intermediate Football Championship, played in Cortown on Friday evening.

In a drab first half, Duggie Dillon opened the scoring within a minute of the throw-in, with a fisted point. Just shy of three minutes later, St Michael’s raised their first white flag. The Carlanstown side went ahead ten minutes later with a point from play.

Oisin O’Brien kicked a point after sixteen minutes, to leave the sides level once again but St Michaels took the lead again within sixty seconds. Again, O’Mahony’s were slow to score and it took ten minutes before Robbie Keelaghan kicked an impressive point.

Two minutes before half time, St Michaels kicked only the seventh point of the half, to leave them with a single point advantage at the interval.

Just as in the first half, it was Dillon who scored the first score following the resumption and the sides were level once again. Aodhan Mallon finished an impressive run with a point, giving O’Mahony’s the lead for the first time since the fourth minute.

Shane Maguire gave a well-placed pass to Keelaghan  for a sixth-minute point, before Mallon added another score to leave three between the sides. St Michaels only score of the half came in the ninth minute and was followed by a five minute scoreless period.

Dillon burst through the St Michaels defence midway through the half, sending the ball to the net and putting distance between the sides for the first time. Substitute Conor Finnegan pointed and a second Dillon goal was denied by the St Michaels netminder a minute later.

In the twenty-second minute, Finnegan broke through two tackles to kick an impressive score. A scoreless period ensued before Evan Coffey and Darragh Maguire kicked injury time points, leaving O’Mahony’s nine point victors
