Navan O’Mahony’s 4-08 Drumree 1-20

Navan O’Mahony’s suffered their first loss in the intermediate hurling championship against Drumree in Dunsany on Saturday evening, with three points separating the sides at the final whistle.

Tom Condon opened the scoring with a point in the opening minute. Drumree soon swung into action and took the lead with two points from play. The lead returned to O’Mahony’s when a Jack Walsh shot was stopped  by the Drumree netminder but fell to the net. In the next three minutes, Drumree added three scores to take the lead again.

Sean McDermott added his sides second score after a good play between Dermot McKenna and Finn Malone. In the next five minutes, Drumree extended their lead with three points (two from play), while Condon added another for the Brews Hill side after a great run from Sam Formosa.

Navan O’Mahony’s outscored Drumree three points to two in the final ten minutes of the first half and went in two points adrift at the interval.

Cormac Keyes reduced the deficit to the bare minimum with a point within fifteen seconds of the resumption, but this was nullified by two Drumree points at the opposite end of the field. 

After ten minutes, a long-distance Jack Walsh free ended in the net and left the sides level for the first time since early in the first half. Almost five minutes past without score until Drumree scored two in quick succession to once again gain the advantage.

A Walsh free in the eighteenth minute was followed by a goal from Shane McCarthy, who had won the ball from netminder John Foley’s free. This left O’Mahony’s two points ahead but Drumree were not going to give up. The next five scores, three from frees and two from play brought the game into injury time and in Drumree’s favour. 

With thirty-three minutes on the clock, Walsh found the net for the third time to leave the sides level with the clock ticking down. The drama wasn’t over, however, and a high long-distance shot from Drumree landed in the net, sealing the result for Drumree.

Navan O’Mahony’s have a bye in the final round and so must wait until then to see where they finish in the group.
