Paddy McDermott Carnaross

Carnaross 3-19 Clonard 0-9

Carnaross ran out convincing winners against Clonard in idyllic conditions in Athboy on Saturday evening. Since 2011, the North Meath men have only won three first rounds of championship, with all 3 coming against the same opponent, Clonard.

Carnaross burst out of the blocks with Paddy McDermott causing havoc scoring 2-3 in the first 10minutes. He goaled inside 3 minutes after getting in behind the south Meath men’s defence which was swiftly followed up by a Dermot McGee point. Next, Charlie Murphy saw his effort spilled with Darragh O’Reilly first to react resulting in a penalty being awarded to the hoops. McDermott made no mistake with the spot kick putting Carnaross into an early commanding position. Clonard were rattled but they registered their first score after 18 minutes. Darragh O’Reilly began to find his feet knocking over three points on the spin. Clonard, to their credit, began to show their capability, scoring 4 of the next 5 points, including some excellent frees off the ground. Carnaross’ sole score in this barren period came from the talisman McDermott. The final score of the half was a superb score from distance from vice-captain Cormac Yore. At the change of ends, the scoreboard read: Carnaross 2-09 to Clonard’s 0-05

McDermott continued to convert chances in the second half after excellent build up play by Shane Yore, Tomas Plunkett and Charlie Murphy. Murphy got himself on the scoreboard to cap an all-action championship debut. The third quarter was a slightly drab affair as both teams tired in the blazing heat leading to erratic shooting that never troubled the scoreboard. Reinforcements were called for as Carnaross introduced their full allotment of 5 substitutes in the final quarter. Dermot McGee, who was most definitely not making his debut, doubled his tally to cap an industrious performance from midfield. Darragh O’Reilly took over the scoring duties from McDermott with his goal coming after some tidy build up play involving his twin brother Shane. The bench made a telling impact with Dillon Fox and Cillian Comaskey sharing 3 points between them. The final score of the contest came from Darragh O’Reilly as the Ross ran out convincing winners.

Carnaross will be looking to overturn last year’s opening round defeat against Boardsmill in Round 2 in Sean Newman Park on Saturday August 24th
