Navan O’Mahony’s 2-24 Wolfe Tones 0-09

A strong second-half performance saw Navan O’Mahony’s make it three from three in the Intermediate Hurling championship. Three points separated the sides at half time.

Cormac Keyes wasted no time, raising a flag within sixty seconds of the throw-in. Debutant Tom Condon followed suit shortly afterwards, before Wolfe Tones pointed at the opposite end of the pitch. Three minutes later, Wolfe Tones pointed to leave the sides level before missing an opportunity to go ahead with a wide. The sides exchanged points again with Shane McCarthy pointing from play (after a good set up from Finn Malone) and a Wolfe Tones free.

A strong seven-minute period saw O’Mahony’s add five points between the ninth and sixth minutes. These came from Condon, Keyes, McCarthty as well as Sam Formosa and Malone adding their names to the scoresheet. 

A few minutes passed without score until Wolfe Tones pointed from play and Keyes responded with a free. The twenty-third minute saw a Wolfe Tones player dismissed for a tackle on Walsh but O’Mahony’s failed to capitalise on the extra man for the remainder of the half.

Walsh increased his side’s lead early in the second half, with two impressive points from play. Wolfe Tones scored their first score of the half with a sixth minute free. 

Navan O’Mahony’s pushed on in the next ten minutes, increasing their lead and gaining control of the game. Half-time substitute Conor O’Dwyer pointed in the ninth minute, with points from Condon, Evan Brady, Jack McConnell and Dermot McKenna following suit.

This run was broken with a Wolfe Tones point from play. Within a minute, a long-range shot from Jack Flynn ended in the net increasing the distance between the sides. An opportunity for Wolfe Tones to rectify this was missed when their penalty-taker shot to the left of the target. 

The game was over as a contest at this stage and Navan O’Mahony’s kept the scoreboard ticking over. Walsh, Malone, McKenna and Keyes all added to their earlier tallies.  In injury time, substitute Thomas Cully broke through a heavy tackle to pass to Formosa. Under pressure from the opposition, he still managed to find the net. The last free of the game came courtesy of a Walsh free.

Drumree await in the next and final round, as O’Mahony’s had been due to play St Peters Dunboyne in the final round but they have withdrawn from the competition.
