St. Ultans Cortown Gaels 4-16 Duleek Bellewstown 2-8
The last kick of the ball separated these two sides in the MFT Group E final in early May with St. Ultans Cortown Gaels coming out on top in the closing stages. There was no such problems for the combination side in the Minor Football League Division 4 final played at Pairc Tailteann. PHOTOS
Duleek Bellewstown were dealt an early blow when losing influential midfielder Cormac Lenehan to an injury in the warm up.
Both sides missed early goal chances and by the midway point Ultans Cortown held a 0-3 to 0-2 advantage. From there on the team in White and Green dominated. The impressive Tom Brennan got the game's opening goal , Kian Fitzsimons and Cian Loughran added points before Brennan was in for his second goal. Cillian Yore and Loughran completed their first half tally and Derek O’Brien’s charges went to the dressing room 2-7 to 0-4 in front.
Daniel Scully and Loughran traded early second half points. Duleek Bellewstown were holding their own and by the midway point they were still in the game trailing 2-11 to 0-6. By the 20th minute they had the lead down to seven after points from Glen Callaghan and Jamie Hunt, a goal from Paddy Kavanagh.
That’s as good as it got for the boys in Green and Gold as St. Ultans Cortown Gaels roared back into the game. Substitute Conn Brennan got the ball rolling with a quick fire 1-1 and Tom Brennan completed his hat-rick from the penalty spot and put them on the road to a comprehensive victory. Duleek Bellewstown centre back Caeoimhin Kirwan completed the scoring with a well worked goal.
After the game St. Ultans legend Mickey Ball presented the MFL Division 4 cup to St. Ultans Cortown Gaels captain Oisin Dunne Christie.
