Kildalkey's Jamie Kavanagh

Kildalkey 2-17 Kilskyre/Moylagh 3-12

Reigning champions Kildalkey took on Kilskyre/Moylagh on a pristine Rathmolyon pitch on Sunday morning in the first round of the IHC played in ideal conditions and after a tough battle emerged with a 2 point win.

This was a close game throughout and not much separated the sides but it was Kilskyre/Moylagh that made the better start and raced into an early lead and had the ball in the Kildalkey net the first of 5 goals in the game to lead 1-4 to 0-1 with Jamie Kavanagh getting the Kildalkey point. Slowly but surely Kildalkey got to grips with the game and 2 goals from Mattie Cully and Podger Geoghegan who was causing all sorts of trouble at full forward had the blues in front but Kilskyre/Moylagh hit back with another goal before half time as the score board read 2-10 to 2-5 to the blues the other points coming from Cully, Ryan Byas, Alex Rickard and Ross Flynn.

Geoghegan struck the first 2 poof the second half before having to leave the field through injury and the lively Lee Coldrick replaced him.

Kilskyre weren’t going away and drew level after scoring another goal and a couple of Willie McGrath frees and the game was on a knife edge the Kildalkey points coming from Coldrick, Flynn and Cully

Ryan Byas was mopping up a lot of ball and stopped a few Kilskyre attacks and Kevin McKeon won a lot of dirty ball

Cully hit the last 2 frees to push his team 2 points up with time ticking down and as Kilskyre pushed for a goal the experienced Paul Fagan made a smart reflex save to keep them out and the danger was cleared and Kildalkey held on for the win.

This was a good game with both teams giving it their all with nothing between them and they could meet again later in the year if they keep playing like this in a highly competitive IHC with a number of teams with realistic chances of winning it outright .

Ryan Byas, Alex Rickard, Ross Flynn, Kevin McKeon, Geoeghan and Cully all had good performances in a what was a great start to get their team up and running.
