Fionn McHale clears his lines for Dunderry during the SHC clash against Dunboyne at Pairc Tailteann

Dunderry 1-19 Dunboyne 0-19

Dunderry went into the 2024 senior hurling championship after a good league campaign. The last few games however got away from them and spirits were low heading into Pairc Tailtean to face St Peters Dunboyne.

The hotly tipped Dunboyne side had 2 points got before Jordan Martyn opened Dunderrys account. Next Donagh Ó Laoire drilled over to finish a move involving O Driscoll and Stephen Coogan. Mark Leavy scored his first senior point from a tight angle in the corner of the hospital end after Martyn picked him out. Dunboyne leveled proceedings before O Driscoll found Ó Laoire and he slotted  neatly over the left shoulder. Evan Nolan wanted in on the action and hit 3 frees on the bounce and followed that up with a point from play after Conor Leavy supplied a perfect pass. Dunboyne stopped the rut  with one from play and then there followed four frees in a row evenly distributed between the two sides. Dunboyne struck twice from play and tagged another free to narrow the gap to a point. Dunderry management reacted to opposition changes and reaped the awards until half tim. Jordon Martyn pointed his second before youngester Mark Leavy opened his shoulders and pointed excellently off the stick. Dunboyne missed at the other and Fagans puc out landed in Stephen Coogans hand, he shot , hit the post, Ó Laoire collected it on the end line , passed to Mark Leavy , it was saved but only as far as O Driscoll who rounded the keeper and left himself with a simple tap in with 29 mins gone. The older of the Ó Laoires (who has brought Cork hurling to  a new level due to work placement with a company based outside the rebel city) drilled over his 3rd of the half to leave it 1-13 to 0 -9 at the interval.

Dunboyne were seen with a 24 pack of lucozade before the game  and must have drank the lot at half time because they hit Dunderry for 5 at the resumption of play.

Who should stand up for Dunderry only the classy Stephen Coogan. Níall Ó Laoire gathered a spilled ball on the forty, found Conor Leavy ,who in turn picked out Coogan to open his account. The impressive Ó Laoire drove another one over to put four between the teams.

A Dunboyne point was cancelled out by a fine Jamie Duffy strike and then Evan Nolan took his sides only opportunity from placed ball in the second half to push the gap out to five. A Dunboyne score from play prompted Ó Laoire to respond with his 5th of the evening. Two for Dunboyne from play and one from a free had the deficit down to two but comet the hour- comet the man,  up pops Stephen Coogan with his second followed  soon after by the final whistle.

A good opener from Dunderry -  with six scoring forwards and a a very positive attitude on the field.

Best for the Village were, Cian Coogan , Níall Ó Laoire and Fionn Mc Hale, Conor Leavy, Daire O Driscoll & Donagh Ó Laoire.
