Navan O’Mahony’s 3-13 Cortown 2-14
Hugo Fitzherbert certainly earned an Easter Egg or two this morning, contributing a hat-trick to propel Navan O’Mahony’s to a two-point victory over Cortown on sunny Sunday morning in a cracking game on the Trim Road. The home side had eight players make their mark on the score-card.
With the wind behind them, Cortown got off to a quick start and led by four points to no score after five minutes. Ronan Clarke and Ivo Fitzherbert narrowed the gap with two points in quick succession before Cortown responded in turn.
For the following ten minutes, both sides added two points with Jack Quinn raising both white flags for the town side. Midway through the half, Cortown extended the lead with a goal from play and duly pushed on to kick two points within sixty seconds.
Fitzherbert, following a great play starting with Jack Lafford and Kian Magee, rattled the net to give his side some hope approaching half time. Cortown added a 23rd minute point from a free and Fitzherbert looked to be through on goal again but was fouled before getting a shot off. Shane McCarthy kicked the resulting free over the bar and a Clarke point left four points between the sides at the interval.
Navan O’Mahony’s 1-06 Cortown 1-10
Fitzherbert burst through the Cortown defence within seconds of the throw-in for his second goal, narrowing the gap to a single point. Sixty seconds later, McCarthy equalised with a free before points from play from Ciaran Vaughan and Adam McEvoy put Navan O’Mahony’s ahead for the first time.
A fifth minute point from Cortown left the Brews Hill outfit ahead by a single point, but this was extended to five with another McCarthy free and Fitzherbert’s third goal. Four minutes later, Cortown were awarded a penalty which was duly saved by Aaron Byrne, although the penalty-taker found the net from the rebound to leave two points between the sides.
With ten minutes to go, the sides were level. Conor McEvoy gave his side the lead with a well-taken point, but this was nullified by a similar effort from Cortown at the opposite end of the pitch, Both sides missed opportunities in the final ten minutes, but two McCarthy frees were enough to see out the game and Navan O’Mahony’s made it two from two in the Division 5 league.
