Meath 2-20 Kildare 3-14

Meath made a winning start to life in the National Hurling League Division 2A with this three point victory over Kildare in a very entertaining encounter played in windy conditions at Pairc Tailteann.

The visitors playing with the elements made a great start and aided by a Cian Boran goal raced into a 1-2 to 0-0 lead after eight minutes. With 20 minutes gone Kildare were still in control and led 1-6 to 0-2 before the home side enjoyed their first good spell in the game. Nicky Potterton raised the games first green flag and three points followed in quick succession from Potterton, Padraig O’Hanrahan and James Toher to cut the lead to a point. Kildare went in at the break in front 1-9 to 1-7.

Toher gave the home side a perfect start to the second half with a majestic point from a sideline cut and by the 10th minute the sides were level 1-10 each.

Potterton put Meath in front with his and Meath’s second goal. James Murray and O’Hanrahan added points and Meath were three up with 10 minutes remaining. Kildare were struggling to find any space but that all changed when Conn Kehoe levelled matters with a well taken goal.

Meath replied in fine style to that blow with four unanswered points from Daire Shine, Toher, Seanie Martin and Murray to gain control again. Seoirse Bulfin’s men were six in front with time almost up before James Burke netted to make it a one score game but Meath closed out the remaining minutes to pick up the two points on offer.

Meath scorers: Nicky Potterton 2-2, Padraig O’Hanrahan 0-6, James Toher 0-4, James Murray 0-2, Simon Ennis, Tom Shine, Sean Martin, James Kelly, Daire Shine and Niall McLarnon 0-1 each.

Kildare scorers: Jack Sheridan 0-7, Cian Barron 1-1, Jack Higgins 0-3, Conn Kehoe and James Burke 1-0 each, Muiris Curtin 0-2, Rian Barron 0-1.
