Jack Walsh gains possession for O'Mahonys during the Leinster Club JHC clash against Leixlip

Navan O’Mahony’s 0-11 Leixlip 3-17

Navan O’Mahony’s lost out to a strong Leixlip side, Senior B Champions in Kildare, in the opening round of the Leinster JHC in Clane yesterday, with a good supporting crowd having travelled from Navan.

Within the opening minute, Navan O’Mahony’s had opened the scoring courtesy of a Darragh Connell point. Leixlip hit two wides from play in response, before hitting third time lucky and drawing the sides level in the third minute.

Both sides had a number of wides but Leixlip were the ones to break this spell, converting a free to take the lead. They added another two points in quick succession, followed by a free from Connell between the uprights.

The first chance of goal for either side came in the twelfth minute, when Navan O’Mahony’s netminder John Foley diverted a shot over the end line for a 65, which was duly converted. Jack Walsh was fouled after winning possession from the resulting puckout, a free which Connell then scored. The young Navan O’Mahony’s man added to his free tally with a point from play almost immediately.

Leixlip dominated the next ten minutes of the game and a diving save from Foley prevented a goal, with the rebound being struck over the bar. Goals did come however, and by the 25th minute, Leixlip had extended their lead scoring 2-03 in a ten minute period.

Navan O’Mahony’s had a better closing five minutes, with Finn Malone and Cormac Keyes both adding their names to the scoresheet from play. Leixlip’s last score came in the twenty-eighth minute while the final score of the half came from Walsh, after a well-placed pass from Keyes.

Quick off the mark in the second half, Leixlip extended their lead with a free within thirty seconds of the throw-in. Malone responded with a point for his side at the opposite end of the pitch shortly afterwards.

On the five-minute mark, a good interception from Colm O’Toole and Evan Brady denied Leixlip a goal chance, but it only delayed as the Kildare side regained possession and found the net. Leixlip added another two points in quick succession, slowly building their lead.

Connell made an attempt at goal from a free in the ninth minute but it was saved and cleared to safety. The following ten minutes saw Leixlip add another three points before Navan O’Mahony’s, through Walsh, raised a white flag.

Two late goal opportunities were denied by the Leixlip netminder, when Malone and substitute Sean McDermott shot on target. The final two scores of the game came from Navan O’Mahony’s  by Connell and Walsh but the game was long over as a contest at this stage.
