Meath proved too strong for Carlow in this round 2 Leinster Under 20 football championship played under lights at Ashbourne. PHOTOS

This game was as good as over after eight minutes as the Royals stunned the visitors with an early scoring burst.

From the throw in Meath were on the front foot and Ruairi Kinsella had the ball in the Carlow net in the first minute. John Finnerty, Shaun Leonard, Sean Emmanuel, Oisin Keogh, Kinsella and Eoghan Frayne added points to open up a 1-6 to 0-0 lead.

Carlow eventually worked their way into the game with two pointed frees from full forward Bryan McMahon and were denied a goal by excellent save from Meath keeper Oisin McDermott.

Kinsella extended Meath’s lead soon after with a point and an excellent second goal. Carlow finished the half with another brace through John Phiri and McMahon as Meath went to the dressing room 2-7 to 0-4 in front.

Scores were at a premium in the second half with both teams determined to keep possession. Carlow failed to score and were guilty of some wayward shooting along with the upright coming to Meath’s rescue midway through the half from a Dara Curran shot.

The impressive Jack Kinlough (2) and a Frayne brace accounted for Meath second half tally.

Round 3 sees Meath travel to Portlaoise next Tuesday to take on Laois. The winner goes to the semi final, the loser to the quarter final.
