Ladies FL Div 2: Depleted O'Mahonys fall short

March 27, 2023

O'Mahonys Neasa McDermott and Charlie Murray

Navan O’Mahony’s 2-06 St Colmcilles 3-09

Down a contingent of players on various county duties, Navan O’Mahony’s fell short of the St Colmcilles challenge on Sunday morning on the Trim Road. Two goals in quick succession gave the visitors the momentum to push on and claim the game.

Two minutes in, St Colmcilles opened the scoring with a point from play. This was soon answered with a close free for half back Sophia Fitzherbert, followed quickly with a point from play from Tara Gleeson. Navan O’Mahony’s held the lead for seven minutes, during which St Colmcilles broke through on goals on several occasions and would have found the net only for the skill of netminder Robyn Murray. The attacks kept coming, however and the visitors eventually raised a green flag, before repeating the feat within sixty seconds.

Navan O’Mahony’s had quickly gone from defending a narrow lead, to chasing the game. St Colmcilles managed to add another goal and two points to their tally, leaving ten points between the sides with eight minutes to go.

Full forward Megan Collins took a goal shot from a close-range free, which was duly saved before Collins slotted the rebound over the bar. A further two points from Collins in the closing minutes of the half left a deficit of seven, with all to play for in the second half

Keen to defend the lead they had built, St Colmcilles started the second half well extending their lead by two points within the first five minutes. Just as St Colmcilles had done in the first half, Navan O’Mahony’s managed two goals in quick succession, both from Megan Collins.

This sudden change in fortunes suddenly breathed lift into what had been a one-sided game, leaving only a kick of a ball between the sides. Despite battling hard, Navan O’Mahony’s were unable to break the three point margin between the sides and St Colmcilles managed to edge themselves further ahead in the final quarter.

Four points from play left it advantage St Colmcilles by seven going into injury time. Navan O’Mahony’s scoring was bookended on both ends with a Fitzherbert score, with the captain adding a point from play at the end to her opening free.
