Ballinabrackey's Damien Carroll

Ballinabrackey 1-18 Simonstown 3-12 AET. Simonstown win on penaties

Ballinabrackey must battle on again after narrowly losing out on safety in Trim on Sunday evening.

Simonstown got the first score on the board with a point from play in the first 30 seconds. Within the first minute of the game Ballinabrackey found themselves behind by 4 as Simonstown got a goal. They took charge in the first few minutes and got another point from play while playing with power. Erick Clancy moved well in midfield and broke through to get the first point from play for Ballinabrackey to help settle the nerves. Simonstown quickly responded with a point from free. Ballinabrackey worked hard to move the ball up the field and Damien Carroll kicked a free over the bar. In the 21st minute of the first half Simonstown picked up a black card. A point from Erick Clancy and Damien Carroll left 3 points in it at half time. (HT) Ballinabrackey 0:04 Simonstown 1:04.

Ballinabrackey came back out in the second half and got a score straight away with Damien Carroll kicking a point from play. Seamus Curry kicked over a free but Simonstown came back into it to kick 4 scores in a row. Ballinabrackey found themselves five points behind but they didn’t panic under pressure and went on to kick the next 5 scores.  David Carroll kicked the next score and we thought that it was the ending we were praying for but Simonstown got one last chance and kicked a score to keep the teams level at full time facing into extra time. (FT) 1:09 Simonstown 0:12 Ballinabrackey.

Within the first 50 seconds of extra time Ballinabrackey found the back of the net with a great goal from Erick Clancy. In the following play Simonstown scored a goal and the teams were back level again. A similar situation happened again when Ballinabrackey went 5 points ahead with scores from Sean Kavanagh and Damien Carroll. This should have been a time when Ballinabrackey closed down the game but Simonstown yet again found the back of the net. We went into half time of extra time up by two points with the score as Ballinabrackey 1:17 to Simonstown 3:09 (HT ET). Simonstown went on to score 3 more points in the second half of extra time, Ballinabrackey picked up a black card during this time but it was Damien Carroll’s free that put the sides back level and put the teams into a penalty shootout. (FT ET Ballinabrackey 1:18 Simonstown 3:12)

It was not meant to be for the Bracks in penalties and Simonstown went on to win the game in penos but what a game by both sides. No team deserved to lose this one but Simonstown left Trim the happier side yesterday. Ballinabrackey will face Navan O’Mahonys in the next round of relegation.
