Navan O’Mahony’s 3-15 Dunderry 2-08

Navan O’Mahony’s secured their spot in the Div 5 Hurling Final last night with a convincing win over Dunderry. Played with thirteen a side under the fair play rule, it was a high scoring encounter which saw five green flags raised.

Shane O’Brien opened up the scoring with a point from play in the opening minutes – Dunderry soon responded and there was little to separate the teams in the first twenty minutes. Navan O’Mahony’s scores came from Gavin Fox, veteran Snowy and Patrick Leahy who made his return to the hurling pitch for the game, much to the delight of the home crowd.

A free from O’Brien and a long-range score from Diarmuid Collins put some distance between the sides for the first time, further extended by a goal from John Foley who left the Dunderry keeper with little hope of stopping his shot. Another score left seven points between the sides with a few minutes left in the half. Dunderry managed to raise two white flags in this period, leaving themselves very much in the game at the interval.

Dunderry brought themselves right back into it in with a goal straight away after the break, leaving only two points between the sides.  This was soon nullified when Gout McConnell broke through the Dunderry defence. Picking his spot to the netminders right, he made no mistake in burying a goal that no doubt he’ll be talking about for the next six months!

Navan O’Mahony’s kept the scoreboard ticking over for the next period with scores from O’Brien, McConnell, Pat Nolan and Paddy Skehan. With ten points between the sides, the game was finished as a contest when substitute Ben McEntagart claimed the ball in the square ensuring that it reached the net to extend the lead even further.

A late goal for Dunderry was a case of too little too late for the visitors and left ten points between the sides at the final whistle. Credit must go too to Navan O’Mahony’s defence who worked hard to keep Dunderry advances at bay. Impressive performances from Thomas Cully and Peter McLoughlin were matched by clearances from the Nutcracker Hynes, reminiscent of a late noughties JJ Delaney.

With Rathmolyon having beaten St Patricks in the other semi final, they provide the opposition in the final with no fixture confirmed yet.
