Syddan's Daire Rowe with Cian McPartland Oldcastle

OLDCASTLE 3-14 SYDDAN 1-9

Syddan plunged into relegation trouble following this 11 points defeat in the IFC at Moynalty on Friday evening.

Oldcastle who scored 2-1 in added time to overcome Meath Hill in their opening encounter didn’t need similar heroics here as they were well clear long before the final whistle.

Syddan led by a goal entering the closing stages of the first half but were pegged back by a Robbie Farrelly goal on 29 minutes and a Jason Scully free in added time gave Oldcastle a 1-6 to 1-5 interval advantage.

Early second half points from Kevin Traynor and Michael Fedigan restored the lead for Syddan but their challenge fizzled out after that as Oldcastle, boosted by a Colin Hawdon goal took control of proceedings.

Syddan who relied heavily on Daire Rowe for scores led 1-4 to 0-5 after a Padraic Dillon delivery was finished to the net by Sean Clare on 22 minutes. They suffered a number of body blows throughout the half with keeper Ciaran Farrelly having to be replaced in the opening quarter following an injury.

Kevin Traynor who was edging the exchanges at midfield was forced off with a cut under his eye while corner back Tommy Meade also retired injured just before the break. Traynor returned to the action at the start of the second half but not even his promptings to turn the game in his side’s favour.

That Hawdon goal on 35 minutes left it 2-6 to 1-7 and with county player Jason Scully excelling Oldcastle led 2-11 to 1-8 at the second water break.

Syddan needed a goal to get back into contention but instead it was Oldcastle who found the net with Ronan Maguire finishing from close range on 48 minutes. The winners added three further points after that while Syddan’s only score in the same period was a Daire Rowe point, his sixth of the game.
