SFC: Walsh returns as Na Fianna win again

Na Fianna made it two wins from as many outings in Dunshaughlin on Saturday evening with a commanding win over St Colmcille’s.

The return of County man Shane Walsh was crucial to this win as he terrorised the St Colmcille’s defence throughout, notching 1-06 in the process.

Na Fianna made a good start with early points from Ethan Devine and Stephen Maher. St Colmcille’s were wasteful with their shots as they hit numerous wides early on and Shane Walsh was on hand to punish as he hit three points in a row, two of which were excellent long range efforts. Strong defensive play from Na Fianna began to pay off as they dispossessed their opponents frequently and took their scores at the other end. Oran Smullen also surged forward from wing back to kick a fine effort to see Na Fianna lead 0-7 to 0-5 at half time.

Daniel Queeney hit an early free in the second half to get Na Fianna off the mark but St Colmcille’s had a good spell, hitting two points in reply. Shane Walsh hit the back of the net for Na Fianna soon after with a  calm finish to the bottom corner, followed by a good point as they held the St Colmcille’s comeback at bay.

Resolute defending from Na Fianna broke up many St Colmcille’s attacks and when substitute Ciaran McDonnell hit 1-01 when introduced, the goal courtesy of a great catch from the youngster, it put the game beyond their opponents as Na Fianna saw out the game.

Best for Na Fianna in a very complete team performance were Sean Rafferty, Oran Smullen, Ethan Devine, Jamie Queeney, Sean Martin and Shane Walsh.

Next up for Na Fianna is a round three clash with Ballinabrackey.
