October 05, 2020

Castletown's Kevin Ross

Castletown 1-09.  St Pats 2-11

Relegation to the junior ranks for 2021 was on the cards for one team at the end of 60 plus minutes in Donore and unfortunately it was Castletown on the wrong end of the full time score. It was a tale of two halves with Castletown dominating first half proceedings and the tide turning at half time with St Pats upping their intensity and finding their shooting boots.

Castletown were quick out of the blocks scoring two points in quick succession one from Kevin Ross and a free from Darren Finney.  St Pats got up a running with a free but Castletown responded within a minute with a Gerard Farrelly point from play. St Pats scored their second point and there was a scoring drought for about 6 minutes until Kevin Ross got Castletowns fourth point from a free, St Pats got a free immediately to add to their total of three points and it was their last score of the first half. At this stage Cormac Reilly blew his whistle for the first half water break the match was evenly balanced with Castletown ahead by one point - four points to three. After the water break with scores hard to come by Castletown extended their lead to two points with another score from Kevin Ross. Castletown were awarded a free with just over five minutes to play in the first half Kevin Ross took the free which hit the right post and Darren Finney was alert to the breaking ball which he rifled into the back of St Pats net. Castletown were on front foot at this stage but St Pats always looked dangerous and Jonathan Ginnity produced two fine saves to keep a clean sheet and secure Castletowns lead. Kevin Ross pointed over a free which was the last score of the first half. Half time score 1-06 to 0-03.

St Pats made three changes at half time and this seems to be a decisive factor as they outscored Castletown 2-08 to 0-03 in the second half. St Pats within a minute scored a point to reduce the deficit to five points and had increased their intensity in spades. Darren Finney got Castletown off the mark with a free with eight minutes into the second half and Tommy Smith added another point from play but St Pats responded with a point from play of their own to leave the score 1-08 to 0-05 with 10 minutes gone in the second half. Castletowns next score would not come for 20 minutes and within that time St Pats took full advantage and scored 2-05, all but their first goal from play which came from a penalty just over five minutes to play. Castletowns last score came from a free from Kevin Ross with time almost up. But St Pats got the final say when they popped over a free on 62 minutes and then Cormac Reilly blew the full time whistle. The full time score was Castletown 1-09 St Pats 2-11.
