JFC semi final: Dunsany bow out

September 21, 2020

Dunsany's Pierre Fox

Dunsany 0-9 St. Vincent’s 1-7

Following a number of early spurned opportunities, Dunsany trailed by 0-3 to 0-00 after 19 minutes. Dunsany eventually posted their first score in the 22nd minute with a Pierre Fox free.

Fox followed up with another 2 points from frees to leave St. Vincent’s ahead by 0-4 to 0-3 at half time. In between the points, Dunsany opened up the St. Vincent’s defence but the subsequent goal attempt was wide of the mark.

Four minutes after the restart, Jack Cottrell landed a beautifully struck point to leave it all square.

The turning point of the came 7 minutes later. Tommy Fields for St. Vincent’s launched a speculative ball towards the Dunsany goal. It looked is if it might be heading for a point but dropped, fortuitously for St. Vincent’s, under the bar for the only, crucial goal of the match. Cian O Neill, the Dunsany goalkeeper in a frantic attempt to scramble the ball clear, collided with the upright and after a lengthy break in the match, Cian had to be substituted by Ciaran Flynn.

Dunsany’s Joey Keena and Declan Smyth continued to orchestrate matters from the backs, driving forward at every opportunity. Substitute David Boyle pulled one back in the 12th minute, followed by another nice point from Jack Cottrell leaving Dunsany just 1 point behind. Three subsequent points from each side left it with Dunsany still trailing by the single point.

In the lengthy period of injury time, Dunsany had a number of missed free chances to at least level it up but the 1 point difference prevailed at full time. Best of luck to St. Vincent’s in the final. Dunsany, with their large contingent of young players coupled with some more experienced ones, can still look forward to better times ahead.

Best for Dunsany were Joey Keena, Declan Smyth and Jack Cottrell .
