Meath's Aideen Guy with Fiona Rochford Wexford during the Leinster Ladies IFC game at Dunshaughlin

Meath 1-11Wexford 1-15

Meath took on Division 2 finalists Wexford in the 3rd round of the Championship today in a blustery Dunshaughlin.

All in all the team gave a good account of themselves against a Wexford side with the favourite tag. A previous meeting of the teams was a one sided affair but todays encounter was much closer.

Wexford opened the scoring with a point in the opening seconds of the game. Followed quickly by another the Meath Ladies needed to settle into the game and have belief in themselves and their ability. Receiving a good pass from Niamh Gallogly, Fiona O'Neill opened the Meath scoring. Wexford pointed again giving them a 2 point lead. Industrious Megan Thynne pacy and skilful combined quick running with a clever pass to Niamh O'Sullivan who pointed for Meath. Good inter play between Maire O'Shaughnessy, Kate Byrne, O'Neill and O'Sullivan set up Marion Farrelly with the chance to score another point. She put it over and drew the game. Wexford hit a purple patch and hit 1 - 07 while Meath answered with a single point again from the boot of O'Neill who received the pass from Thynne. Stacey Grimes hassled and harried all over the pitch as did Thynne, whose work rate is superb. Aideen Guy, Emma Troy and Niamh Lister did a lot of work in the back against very strong Wexford forwards.

Half Time Meath 0-4 Wexford 1-9

The 2nd half resumed with 3 half time substitutions. Judy Bobbett making her 1st Intermediate appearance in goal along with Katie Newe going into the corner back for Paula Dunne. Aoibheann Leahy replaced Emma White at half forward. With her trademark strong run, Emma Troy brought herself up the field and hit the Royals goal. Katie Newe gave a good account of herself and indeed is a bright prospect for Meath. Judy Bobbett also acquitted herself well in goals.

O'Neill caused the Wexford backs all kind of problems kicking 5 more points for Meath. O'Sullivan hit another point while Grimes pointed for the Royals, a just reward for her huge effort today. Wexford hit 6 points in the 2nd half. One can imagine that Wexford got a shock from the Royals today. They won by 5 points but Meath were a totally different outfit that met them in the League.

The Royals are through to the semi final, opposition to be confirmed. At this time there is no definite opposition for Meath as with Offaly beating Longford today it has caused a log jam at the top of the other group. Also in the pot are Louth. Meath Ladies should know their opposition on Monday night after a fixtures meeting at Leinster Council.
