November 19, 2016

Kiltale's Padraig Kelly gets away from Brian Donovan and John Cahill (Carrickshock) during the Leinster Club IHC semi final at Lomans Park Trim

Carrickshock had too much in the tank for Kiltale in this AIB Leinster IHC semi-final at Trim on Saturday afternoon

Carrickshock (Kilkenny) ........ 2-12
Kiltale (Meath) ...................... 2-9

The Kilkenny IHC winners made crucial scoring bursts in both halves, notably around  the mid-point of the second-half after Kiltale drew level.

Seven successive points either side of half-time saw the Meath SHC winners level matters for the third time, in front of a sizable crowd.  Jack Regan - with assistance from Ross Ryan - posted an excellent score that left it 1-8 to 2-5 after 39 minutes.

That was as good it got for Brian Gilsenan's men as Tommy Shefflin's side finished with a flourish before Jack Regan brought his tally to 1-6 with a goal from an stoppage-time free.

The introduction of Richie Power added to the Carrickshock attack in the final quarter. The loss of John Murphy - on a second yellow card - near the end had no impact on the outcome.

Kiltale were impeded by a total of 12 wides, twice as many as the Kilkenny visitors.

Carrickshock were without suspended captain John Tennyson but used the spaces of St Loman's Park well to put a large deposit on a final spot in the opening half.

When the south Kilkenny side completed their tally in the 51st minute with Michael Rice's fourth point of the game, the board read 2-12 to 1-8.

Scores were tied twice in the opening nine minutes during which time Carrickshock led twice. Darragh Brennan's fifrh minute goal was countered by a brillliant similar score from James Kelly.

Kiltale's goalscorer operated as a sweeper in the opening half. The Kilkenny IHC winners posted 1-3 without reply around the mid-point of the opening 30 minutes.

Mark O'Dwyer's 12th minute goal got the sequence going. Michael Rice, John Butler and Kevin Farrell also contributed during this phase.

A Mark O'Dwyer poinr made it 2-5 to 1-1 after 26 minutes. Jack Regan's second pointed free ended Kiltale's 19-minute barren spell.

Carrickshock were never headed but Kiltale rallied either side of the break to erase a seven-point deficit. However, the visitors took charge when it mattered.
