Late goals from Oisin Mullin and Jordan Flynn helped Mayo wipe away a six-point deficit and defeat Kildare by 2-13 to 0-14 at Croke Park this evening.

James Horan’s men stepped up when their backs were against the wall and Mullin’s superbly taken goal in the 62nd minute swung the momentum in their favour as they were able to see out the five-point win and progress to the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals.

Kildare built on their 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time with points from Jimmy Hyland and Ben McCormack that saw them open up a six-point advantage before Fergal Boland’s point at the other end stemmed the tide.

Points from Cillian O’Connor, Conor Loftus, Lee Keegan and Diarmuid O’Connor signalled Connacht men’s intensions for a big push in the closing quarter.

A Hyland free won by Daniel Flynn inside looked to have steadied the Lilywhites ship but Mullin raced through for Mayo’s goal after and points from Boland and Cillian O’Connor had the Westerners in front heading for injury-time.

Darren McHale’s coolly stroked point made it 1-13 to 0-14 and, in the fifth minute of added time, Flynn would wrap it up by lobbing roaming ‘keeper Aaron O’Neill in an audacious effort in what was effectively the last kick (watch it below).
