Paddy Sheelan Cup final: Sutherland goal helps Dreadnots secure the spoils

Nathan Sutherland scored a crucial goal early in the second half to help Dreadnots secure the Paddy Sheelan Cup on Saturday night.

The game in Clogherhead saw the hosts pushed all the way in the first half by St Mochtas before a dominant second half display helped them ease to victory.

At the end of an entertaining opening period, the home team went in at half time leading 0-7 to 0-5 with points from play from Peter Kirwan and Nathan Sutherland,a point each from play for Pepe Smith and Jay Hughes along with three placed efforts from Hughes. The Mochtas battled to stay in contention and had points from Cormac Smyth, Darren McMahon and Gerry Garland.

The game turned in the Dreadnots favour in the early stages of the second half as they added 1-2 to their tally without reply.

Points from Darragh Shevlin, Anthony Lynch and a goal from Sutherland five minutes after the break left it difficult for the newly promoted seniors but they answered back with two points before Anthony Lynch and Pepe Smith added scores from play.

The winners could enjoy the closing stages and saw Sutherland added his second from a free with five minutes to go before Conor Shevlin and Pepe Smith sealed the win.
