ST PATRICKS 1-13
DUNDALK GAELS 0-12
St Patricks and Dundalk Gaels both advanced to the Senior Championship quarter-finals as a result of this narrow victory for the Pats at Clan na Gael Park on Saturday evening.
The Lordship side recorded the victory they needed, while the Gaels will also be satisfied with the outcome as the margin of defeat was sufficient to see them through ahead of the Geraldines on score difference.
Danny O'Connor provided the inspiration for the Pats as he bagged 1-6 with the crucial goal coming just before the break to give his side an eight-point lead at half time. The Gaels fought back in the second half and although they couldn't overhaul the lead they did enough to qualify.
The Pats began in impressive fashion and scores from O'Connor, Thomas McCann, Aidan McCann and Dessie Finnegan helped them lead by 0-6 to 0-1 inside the opening quarter.
Ger McSorley and Eanna McArdle helped settle the Gaels but the Pats continued to hold the edge and O'Connor's goal in the final minute of the half saw them take a healthy 1-9 to 0-4 lead into the interval.
Leonard Gray stretched the advantage at the start of the second half when he landed a '45' but the Gaels managed to raise their game and kicked four without reply. Points from O'Connor helped keep the Pats in charge but the Gaels finished strongly to kick the last three points and ensure they also went through to the last eight.
