NH MAIRTIN 3-11
KILKERLEY EMMETS 1-9
Nh Mairtin bounced back from their opening day defeat to Newtown Blues as they overcame the challenge of Kilkerley Emmets to book their place in the last eight.
The game in Dunleer saw Kilkerley get off to a brilliant start as Tadgh McEneaney announced his return from a serious hand injury with a goal in the first minute. That was soon cancelled out by a goal from a Sam Mulroy penalty before Rian Hand, Shane Lennon and James Fegan helped restore the Emmets advantage.
The Mairtins hit back in the second quarter and pointed through Wayne Campbell, Conor Healy and Mulroy to level the game at 1-5 apiece on the half time whistle, while a brilliant save from Cillian Quigley helped keep Kilkerley on terms.
A point from Eoghan Callaghan helped edge the Jocks one point clear at the end of the third quarter before the Mairtins grabbed the initiative when JP Rooney came off the bench to score his side's second goal.
Kilkerley tried hard to get back into the game in the closing stages but the Mairtins remained in control and sealed the victory when Mulroy added his second of the game.
The result leaves Kilkerely facing a relegation play-off while the Mairtins join Newtown Blues in the last eight.
