Killian O’Gara hit 1-4 as Dublin got their O’Byrne Cup title defence off to a winning start against Wicklow last night.

It finished 2-15 to 0-9 in Baltinglass, where former Armagh star Oisin McConville took charge in his first competitive game for the home side.

The goals came in the second-half for the Dubs after having led by the minimum at the break, with O’Gara and Colm Basquel netting them on the way to a 12-point victory.

Colm O’Rourke’s reign as Meath manager got off to winning start as they came from behind to defeat Carlow by 0-16 to 1-9 at Netwatch Cullen Park in Group B.

The Royals landed 13 second-half points to get the job done while, in the same group, goals from Dessie Reynolds, Dylan Farrell and Daniel Mimnagh helped Longford record an emphatic 3-18 to 0-13 win over Laois in Portarlington.

Meanwhile, Kildare overcame Wexford’s challenge by 1-18 to 1-11 in Group A and Louth handed Dessie Dolan’s Westmeath side a 1-8 to 0-9 defeat in the opening round.
