NAOMH MAIRTIN 4-16

ST MOCHTAS 2-10

Naomh Mairtin overcame the brave challenge of St Mochtas at Darver on Sunday afternoon to secure their place in the Senior Football Final for a second successive season.

The Monasterboice showed all their experience and quality in the face of a battling display from the Mochtas and were worthy winners in the end.

The Mairtins made a bright start and had three points on the board before Declan Byrne got the Louth Village men off the mark.

Conor Whelan (3) and Val Leddy added to the score for the Mairtins but with Ciaran McMahon, Craig Lennon and Byrne replying for their side, the gap at the water break was 0-7 to 0-4.

The Jocks increased the lead to five but the Mochtas hit back with a goal from Ciaran Byrne. However, their joy was short-lived as Whelan replied almost immediately to see his side lead by 1-10 to 1-5 at half time.

Although the Mid Louth side scored the first point of the second half, the Mairtins upped the tempo and a goal from Sam Mulroy was followed by another from Tom Gray to open up a 3-11 to 1-7 advantage after 41 minutes.

The result was never in doubt from that stage and although the Mochtas pulled a goal back through Conor Garland, the Mairtins saw Conor Whelan cap a fine display with his second goal in the closing stages.
