DUNDALK GAELS 0-17

O’CONNELLS 0-9

Dundalk Gaels got their Senior Championship campaign off to a good start when they had an eight point victory over O’Connells at Ardee on Sunday afternoon.

The Dundalk men had the first point on the board through Eanna McArdle but the O’Connells hit back with three successive scores from Robert Quigley (2) and Niall Conlon.

There was little to separate the teams at that stage and although the Gaels struck three without reply from Kevin McArdle, Derek Crilly and Sean Murray, the teams were level at four points apiece when Conlon fired over at the other end.

The Gaels then enjoyed the upper hand for the remainder of the half as Eanna McArdle, Ger McSorley and Crilly found the target in reply to a Bernard Osborne score to put their side 0-7 to 0-5 ahead at the break.

It continued to be a closely contested encounter in the third quarter and the game was very much in the balance when Quigley’s point on 43 minutes had the teams level once again at nine points each.

The Dundalk side moved up a gear in the closing stages and they surged ahead with points from Jason Clarke, Barry Watters, Jamie Faulkner and Crilly. The O’Connells fought hard to get back in the game but two injury time points from McSorley and Eanna McArdle sealed their fate.
