Ballysteen club notes

March 05, 2019

Senior Football

Our senior footballers began their 2019 County Football League campaign away to Fr. Casey’s last Friday night. A keenly contested first half saw Casey’s start brightly kicking the first four points of the game before we managed to reduce the deficit to two points after 15 minutes. Despite conceding the opening goal of the game, second quarter of the half saw us take control of the game with two quickfire goals and outscoring Casey’s five points to one leaving the scoreboard reading Fr. Casey’s 1-5 Ballysteen 2-7.

The second half started with a strong fightback from the Abbeyfeale men where they outscored us by points to leave both sides level heading into the final stages of the game. We fought bravely to restore our advantage and when we found the net for the third time in the closing stages it looked like we might take the two points on offer. However, in a reverse of last year’s Championship fortunes, Casey’s found the net in injury time to level and then scored the last point of the game to leave the full time score Fr.Casey’s 2-16 Ballysteen 3-12.

Team: Conor Ranahan; Jason Daly, Kevin McMahon, Bill Casey; Matt O’Meara, Pa Ranahan, John O’Shaughnessy; James O’Meara, Jamie O’Sullivan; Sean Whelan, Darragh Ranahan, Cillian Ferris; Danny Neville, Shane Gallagher, Maurice Somers. Subs: Luke Gammell, Alan McGrath, Roger Somers, Callum Daly, Declan Ryan.

Do It for Diarmuid

Recently, former player and friend Diarmuid Barron was diagnosed with cancer upon returning home from New Zealand. This news has shocked everyone associated with the club, but we are determined to support Diarmuid and his partner Jenna through this time. We are looking to organise our own event but in the meantime a number of fundraisers are organised to help with everyday costs.

In New Zealand, the Saint Patrick’s Emerald City GAA club, where Diarmuid played in goals for their Senior Footballers last year, have started an online fundraiser which can be found here https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/do-it-for-diarmuid

A Weekend for Diarmuid will take place this weekend with a number of fundraising events to take place. All money raised over the weekend will go directly to Diarmuid. For more information you can follow the Facebook page: DoitforDiarmuid

National League

Well done to William O’Meara on making his National League debut for the Limerick Senior Hurlers last weekend. William was brought on, replacing Séan Finn, in the opening minutes of the game and acquitted himself well in the wintery conditions. Limerick battled to a draw in Cusack Park. A quarter final against Laois is next up for the All Ireland Champions with throw in at O’Moore Park set for 7pm this coming Saturday.

Hard luck to the Senior Footballers who lost to Derry last Saturday at the Gaelic Grounds. Despite a strong start from the hosts, Derry eventually seized control of the scoreboard to run out five point winners. Limerick now have a rest week before travelling to Wexford on March 16th for their Round 6 fixture.
