On Saturday night last, a huge Galbally GAA contingent travelled to Aherlow House Hotel for the first Annual Social since 2010. It proved to be a night of huge celebration and the following teams were honoured. The 1968 County Junior Football Champions, the 1990 County Intermediate Champions, the 1994 County Senior Football Champions, the 1995 County Junior Hurling Champions, the 1997 County Senior Football Champions and the 2010 County Intermediate Football Champions. We are extremely fortunate in Galbally to have experienced success in the form of County Titles across a number of different eras with different groups of players. The night offered an opportunity to former players to mingle with their former comrades and reminisce on bygone years.
The County Intermediate and Under 21 winning teams of 2018 were presented with their medals. A special mention was given to Johnny Wallace and Michael McCabe who weren’t present on the night and were instrumental in the abovementioned successes. The norm for clubs is to recruit a guest speaker to address the attendance and present the medals. In the past, dignitaries such as Jack Boothman RIP, the former GAA President and Marty Morrissey the RTE Personality have attended Galbally GAA functions. On this occasion Galbally GAA recruited from within. All Ireland winning manager John Kiely presented the medals and spoke with eloquence.
His most significant contribution was his reference to the morning of the All Ireland final, as he drove from his house, through Galbally village, en-route to Colbert Station to get the train to Dublin. He mentioned how memories of deceased former Galbally GAA people flooded his mind, along with other locals including those who were customers of Galtee House, his family home. As we approach a future that appears bright from a Galbally GAA perspective, it is important to remember those who came before and the contributions they made in the past, which paved the foundations for the future of the club. The social was a hugely successful event, and an overall collective club effort, making it unfair to single out individuals. We would like to thank John Cregan and Frank Reidy who represented Limerick County Board and Seamus McElligott of Sport Action Photography for providing the photograph collages.
Our recent Split the Pot fundraiser has been a huge success and we thank the locals for their generosity in supporting this weekly and we are delighted for our winners in recent weeks. The draw took place in Aherlow House Hotel, and we congratulate the winner, Patsy Lynch on his prize of €612. Next draw in the Abbey Bar on Saturday 26th January.
The curtain has finally been drawn on the 2018 season and the new season can now commence under new trainer Derek ‘Gez’ Ryan of Oola. Training will recommence in the coming weeks and hopefully this will lead to further success in 2019.
