AROUND THE WORLD AND A MEDAL 32 YEARS LATER

Little did Gerard Magner know that having been part of the successful Limerick senior hurling squad in 1984/1985 that went on to win the Division one National league title by defeating Clare in the final that it would take 32 years for the medal presentation to proceed !Well fast forward to Killeedy on the opening day of the annual Gorm agus Bán on the July 7th when up to 180 children and 75 adults were there to applaud his heroics when current  Limerick star ,Diarmuid Byrnes and Paudie Fitzmaurice Killeedy All star and fellow player on that team ,presented Gerard with his long lost medal. Gerard moved to Australia in 1985 and missed out on the medal presentations go the victorious Limerick squad  back then and, despite many attempts by his mother Carmel and a request to the late president of the GAA in 1996, Joe McDonagh, it was nowhere to be found. It was not until some serendipity kicked in and that medal which was later  was found in the attic of the late Tom Boland ,then treasurer of the Limerick County Board years after his passing  was passed onto JJ Kenneally jewelers in Limerick who supplied the original  medals to Croke Park   ,with nobody knowing  who this G Magner inscribed on the back of the medal was. Twenty years later JJ Kenneally ,still perplexed by the unknown owner of this medal in his safe , happened to be talking to Mike Alfred in Adare who, when asked who the G Magner , replied that he was his teammate along with Jack O'Connor and Murty Mulcahy  in the Limerick over forties team that had just beaten Tipperary in the All Ireland final ! So  the same G Magner who had marked All star Kieran Purcell of Kilkenny in that national league campaign in 1984  earlier , was marking another  All Star Pat Fox in the over forties final in Birr 20 years later   .The riddle was solved and the owner was found but he had since moved from Australia to New Zealand and settled there with his wife Simone  and two children Anaise and Tarquin .When word went out that he was in Killeedy for a short holiday with his family during the Gorm agus Bán camp ,the behind the scenes flurry took place. .Don Flynn, married to Gerard's sister Miriam, ensured the  family were gathered at Páirc Íde Naofa, Killeedy  for 11 am Thursday for the big surprise . Staff at JJ Kenneallly  who were in on the act dispatched the medal that had been kept in safe keeping at the jewelers shop in Wickham street Limerick  and it was couriered to Killeedy to be there in time for the presentation by guest stars at the camp Limerick number 5 Diarmuid Byrnes and Killeedy All star Paudie Fitzmaurice . They were joined by a host of other Killeedy legends who were there to  salute the heroics of their colleague from the great Killeedy team
