Intermediate Championship Final.

Intermediate Champions of Leitrim at last!!. After three failures at the final hurdle, Ballinamore Seán O'Heslin's clinched the Intermediate Championship with a 0-13 to 2-6 win over Drumkeerin on Sunday. It was with great relief we watched as Mark McGrory's point sailed over the bar, with time almost up. Mark will be remembered as the man who did the trick after several failed attempts at points in those final minutes. It was hard won and Drumkeerin put in an excellent performance which was just as well for us. All of our games in the championship this year were won easily enough but this was a wonderful game and much credit must go to Drumkeerin. We had some top class performers but none more so than man-of-the-match, Dean McGovern, who lorded it at midfield. Comhghairdeas to Paul Prior, in his first year as team manager, who transformed this team, as well as his two assistants; Jason Kellett and Seán McCartin. It was significant also that most of the championship had to be played without our two county men; Shane Moran and Matthew Murphy. For the record, the team that fielded was as follows: Philip Farrelly, Keelan McHugh, Oisín McCaffrey, Conor Moran, Donal Feely, Liam Ferguson, David Duignan, Wayne McKeon, Dean McGovern, Mark McGrory, Peter Reynolds, Luke Murphy, Johnny McWeeney, Niall McGovern, Shane McWeeney. Subs used; Brian Leyden, James McWeeney, Paddy Connaughton and Shane Murphy.

Oíche ag Ceiliúradh

Sunday was a unique occasion with our neighbours, Achadh an Mhuilinn, taking the senior title in similar fashion to our win. The town was buzzing on Sunday evening and night. Our lads arrived back first and did the usual run from Beirne's into the top of the town. No sooner had they disembarked from the lorry than Aughawillan lads were boarding a tractor and trailer at the parochial house for their tour of the town. The Ballinamore lads feasted in Prior's and the Aughawillan lads in the Standing Stone. It was like a Festival night as lads crossed between the two hostelries to congratulate each other. Comhghairdeas to Aughawillan and we hope that the day isn't far off when we might be meting in a senior encounter. That will revive memories!!

Fundraising function for The World Powerlifting Champion.

Fundraiser to support Tommy McCormack's world title bid in Powerlifting is in The Poor Scholar on next Saturday, 15 October. Tickets are only €5, so it's not a lot, but it would mean so much. If you cannot attend, but wish to be associated with this eve, tickets are available from Elaine's Gruaig, Bríd Sullivan, Leone Gallogly or Treacy McGloin. Míle Buíochas.

Pósaidh

Best wishes also to our Cathaoirleach, Michael Quinn and Maeve Sharpley who are getting married this weekend. Fortunately, the county final came at the right time and the right result for Michael. A draw last Sunday would certainly not have suited. Comhghairdeas to Aisling Maxwell and Micheál Creamer who got married last Saturday. Aisling was an outstanding performer for the club in Scór. In Scór na nÓg she won the Leitrim title in Solo Singing in 2004 and 2007 and, in the later year, she won the Connacht title and sang in the All Ireland Final. She also won a county title in Rince Foirne. Aisling also represented the club in Scór Sinsear and won two county titles in Solo Singing, in 2012 and 2013.

Bernadette Spollen - Last link to Carrickmakeegan tragedy

The club extends sympathy to the Wisley family on the death of Bernadette Spollen at the weekend. Bernadette was the last link with the awful tragedy that occurred at Carrickmakeegan Bridge on the 23 August 1942. On that fateful day, six of Bernadette's friends were drowned when the boat they had just boarded, capsized into the canal. Séamus Wisely, a brother of Bernadette's, was one of the victims. Bernadette and six others, as well as the boatman survived. She lived to be 91 years of age and partook in commemorations at Carrickmakeegan in 20012 to mark the 60th anniversary of the event. She was then the last living survivor of the tragedy. Go ndéana Dia trócaire uirthi.

Comhbhrón

Sympathy is extended to the Breen family on the death of Eileen Breen at the weekend. Sonas síoraí dí.

Get well

We wish a speedy recovery to Gay Prior who is hospitalised at the moment. Unfortunately, Gay missed our Intermediate win and the subsequent celebrations in his hostelry. Prior's was, as always, the focal point of our celebrations.
