Nemo Rangers clubman Micheál Martin is the new Taoiseach.
A gaelic football and hurling inter-county season would be a “symbol that the country is fighting the virus”, according to Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
The Taoiseach appeared on RTÉ’s Today with Claire Byrne this morning and explained the thinking behind the Government’s decision to ban supporters from attending sporting events.
He also expressed the hope that inter-county competitions will go ahead as planned.
“In taking the decisions we did on the crowds, we saved the championships and the leagues. We want the championship to go ahead,” he remarked.
“I want an All-Ireland this year because I think it would be a symbol that the country is fighting this virus. That it’s not going to surrender to it.
“I’d love to see the championship completed like all games, League of Ireland, the whole lot, rugby.
“It’s a challenge but to me it speaks to us as a nation if we can make sure that we can organise our sports.
“I’ve met the CMO (Dr Ronan Glynn), I just want to let people know, he’s as passionate a sportsperson as the rest of you out there. He wants to keep the games going, he thinks it’s important for the health of the young people of the country that they are out there training and they are out there playing games.”
