No joy for Mortimer on Kildare JFC debut

Former Mayo sharpshooter Conor Mortimer’s debut in the Kildare JFC at the weekend ended in a heavy defeat.

Lining out for Ardclough – who are better known as a hurling club – the 44-year-old scored two points, but couldn’t save his new club from a crushing 0-3 to 7-25 loss to Athgarvan on Friday evening. Ardclough withdrew from Division 4 of the League in April, so the result didn’t come as a huge surprise.

An All-Star in 2006, Mortimer followed his older brothers Kenneth and Trevor onto the Mayo team and was the county’s all-time leading scorer before being overtaken by Cillian O’Connor. His previous clubs include his native Shrule-Glencorrib and Parnells in Dublin, while he has managed Monasterevin in Kildare and also coached Kilbride in the Meath SFC.
