History was created at Semple Stadium today when Joe Canning broke the all-time scoring record in the All-Ireland senior hurling championship.

The Galway marksman needed six points to surpass Henry Shefflin's record haul of 27-484 (565 points) in 71 championship matches for Kilkenny.

Canning helped himself to 0-9 but couldn't prevent his side from going down to 14-man Waterford who booked their place in the All-Ireland quarter-finals with a 1-30 to 3-20 win.

Having trailed by twelve points at half-time, a spirited rally that yielded two Jason Flynn goals for the Tribesmen just fell short.

For the record, Canning has now scored 27-487 (568 points) in 62 championship outings.
