Meath v Wicklow/Longford

Cavan looked good today. Made me feel better about losing to them in the league. Very cynical team though with all that fouling hope that's not the future of Gaelic football

Just realised that last post should have been in the previous Meath v Cavan thread. From a championship perspective though maybe we're in better shape than we think coming up against Wicklow or Longford, obviously div 3 teams are not as weak as suggested given Armaghs (I would say comprehensive) defeat today

One thing I would worry about is that cavan did exact same to us, we can't seem to counteract the blanket defense, as ironically armagh couldn't either,

"Very cynical team though with all that fouling hope that's not the future of Gaelic football"

Its not the future of football cabbage, it is the present. No team will get anywhere without learning to foul at the right time, and in the right areas, and most importantly to rotate the offenders so that everyone gets a yellow card but no-one gets a red.

We need to be creative to find a solution to this. Perhaps re-introduce the sin-bin for such cynical fouls. It still wouldn't stop players from fouling in the last couple of minutes to protect a lead, but it might work earlier in the game.
Or have a rule that after a certain amount of yellow cards, the entire team is put on a warning, and every subsequent yellw results in the player being sent off.
Or perhaps borrow a rule from basketball. Use the black book to indicate "personal fouls", i.e. fouls made on a player without any effort to play the ball. After 5 of them for the team, then every subsequent personal foul results in a 21 yard free regardless of where in the field it happened.
None of them are great ideas, and it is easy enough to pick holes in them. But we need to try something because it is very hard to watch. It is not good for the spectator when a team is 3 or 4 points up with 10 minutes to go, and spends the rest of the game rugby tackling any player that comes within 60 yards of their goal.

Cavan were young and fearless against Meath at the recent "friendly" in Pilltown, and generally seemed quicker and harder workers to get the breaking ball. Both sides had a myriad of wides, and despite the impressive Cavan final score, had either side steadied with scores from play, the result of that match may have gone either way.

In the end it was well deserved by Cavan, same as in the league matches, but I would be really hesitant to benchmark Meath against any of Cavan's performances. We have the ability all over the pitch - it needs to be converted.

On this subject, who do all think will be opponents?
Id say longford, and if that is case it won't be as easy assignment as some might think, ask mayo, kerry or Dublin, pearse park is not a easy place to get a result, id still expect to win, but must be fully focused. This is mods real test.

Who would you rather face between the two? I'd have to say Wicklow. I'd see us winning in Aughrim a lot easier than over in pearse park. Longford played a lot of competitive games in division 2 while Wicklow had far less in Division 3.

Re: Wicklow or Longford - don't fancy either! Wicklow nearly beat Meath in first game last year, although this year they don't have talisman Leighton Glynn...

But they didn't have Glynn for most of the game last year. This year the will be preparing without him in mind so it won't have the same impact as losing him in the first 20 mins.

I think I'd much prefer Wicklow. Longford away after a win under the belt will be some battle.
