Harnan at 6 on a couple of teams, despite no league time and U21 involvement...haysus wept..no disrespect to the lad, he has a future in the team but that would be a ridiculous decision

Graham , I flat out would of said no ,re joe .however after Sunday nite in trim he was brilliant playmaker ,and set up about three points .so will he feature in the championship ? maybe as a impact sub ,but the pace might be too much for the royal veteran

Both Joe and Farrell are in their 10th year on the senior team so at this stage veteran applies to them I guess.....

brian - you put Dillon and Tormey in your team, yet you say Harnan shouldn't start because he didn't play in the league, contradicting yourself there! Sure Dillon barely played half a game between them in the league. Anyway I don't think any of those 3 will be starting. Giving championship debuts to Dalton, Wallace, Newman and possibly Curran or Young is enough, I'd say thats all they'll go for of the new players for the first game.

Sorry, meant Dillon AND Tormey barely played half a game between them in the league.

TBF you're right Class..
Although Dillon was with U-21 and both he and Tormey were brought on during league final. But as you say looks like 3/4 deutants at a minimum this year...
And if i was absolutely truthful I'd say there's 6/7 positions up for grabs come championship time
Said i'd put a team down too rather than criticise other posters...
I'd imagine nailed on starters are POR, the 2 Reillys, Menton, keoghan, Bray and Newman..all other positions are available

I see a lot of people having Damian Carroll as an automatic starter for the championship which I can't see since he hasn't played any league football. I also think he's still got a lot to prove. He had one very good game against Kildare last year but has only shown glimpses since. Here's my starting 15;

1. Paddy O'Rourke

2. Donal Keoghan 3. Brian Menton 4. Caolan Young

5. Ciaran Lenehan 6. Kevin Reilly 7. Davy Dalton

8. Conor Gillespie 9. Brian Meade

10. Paddy Gilsenan 11. Graham Reilly. 12. Seamus Kenny

13. Eamon Wallace 14. Stephen Bray 15. Michael Newman

This is probably the most obvious starting line up with the exception of Seamus Kenny who may not be fit and Paddy Gilsenan who may be unfit also. Players who may feature instead could be Peader Byrne or David Larkin. Damian Carroll will probably feature at some point while I don't know what the situation is with Micky Burke and Alan Forde. O'Dowd hasn't really given any indication as to what role Joe will play this year but with the omission of Cian Ward and Brian Farrell being knocked down the pecking order this is probably your core forward line for the year.

We can see how O'Dowd is keen to work with the younger players as can be seen with him playing Harnan, Dillon, Tormey etc in the last challenge game. The introduction of Wallace, Newman, Larkin, Young and Dalton this year has also been very positive and its clear to see that O'Dowd is looking at the bigger picture with the development of the younger players. This is essentially what we were looking for because we needed a real freshening up after the same Meath team with the same faces we had been seeing for the last 6 or 7 years. While its good that other younger players have come to the fore I think it is still important that the senior players still play their part because every team needs a balance of youth and experience i.e. Joe Sheridan, Stephen Bray, Seamus Kenny, Brian Farrell and Kevin Reilly. I also reckon we haven't seen the last of Cian Ward. Being dropped off the Meath panel is exactly what he needs and hopefully he works hard on the club scene to get back to county level because a man of his talent would be welcome on most county panels.

With regard to the above post (in my opinion gilsenan or byrne will hold the position where Kenny is listed) we cannot say how effective or positive the likes of dalton. Newman. Larkin. Young etc will have until they have featured in Championship games.

Lets remember. These guys played in a mix matched Div3 and although promotion was secured I for one am still not convinced that the team AT PRESENT is any good to put a big performance in. I do hope to ne proven wrong and with such a young team potential to develop is there. But in the long run. If things dont go well it will be back to the start.

Will these "veterans" be part of an all ireland winning side in 3 years? I dont think so.

Credit to mod for sticking with gillespie. Based on kildare performance we know his potential. Still young with lots to prove.

Apart from the team, what would people like to see in this match?
For me it has to be Graham Reilly playing at 12. Passion and pride from the players, and management making changes quickly if needed.

Whatever about our current midfielders not being mobile enough for midfield, there's no way Joe has the legs for it

think these 11 have cemented a place for the first outing, based on previous selection and form and in case of meade, no other options.

last two places on defence go between caolan young, seamus kenny, davy dalton, micky burke

the other two spots in the forwards go between Joe sheridan, damien carroll, peader byrne, paddy gilsenen, david larkin, sean tobin, andrew tormey.

id go for micky burke and seamus kenny in the backs and damien carroll and peader in the forwards but tough choices
