Replacing Eamon O'Brien - who should it be?

Frankthetank, Jinxie

Lads I just find it plain silly that two names should be put forward for ratification.

The three-man committee was established at the very beginning to find one man to manage our county. They were charged with seeking nominations, carrying out interviews etc with the goal of coming up with the perfect candidate. They were given the power to do a job and by putting forward more than one person they are failing to carry out what was asked of them.

Just my opinion.

I see where you coming from & understand your argument, & I'm definatly not having a go or shooting your opinion down. But in their defence, they done the interviews, they've seen an insight to the plans of both candidates, more than we have. But maybe one or two of the committee seen something in a candidate that he felt was a valuable attribute that perhaps the other didn't posses. So if the only way for them to come back unanimous would be if one man just went along with the rest to get it over with, not necceseraly in the best interest of Meath football. Therefor, but it to the clubs, the people who voted out the last manager. Let them vote in this one.

Don't get me wrong, I'm far from a fan of tge co board & their prehistoric ways, but I just don't think they should get too much slack without all the details being clear.

I am not a regular contributor to this site but like to keep an eye on the various threads. It is interesting to see all of the discussion surrounding who should and should not be the next Meath Manager. Does anyone really know what package Mc Eneany or Cooney will bring to the job. I am reliably informed that the package Gerry Cooney has offered the Co. Board will put in place a structure for Meath football from U16 level up to the Senior Team. Meath football is crying out for this and perhaps had this been put in place a few years ago we might now be looking at much more underage success with a genuine prospect of winning an All Ireland. From what I hear it is going to cost the County Board a small fortune for Banty and his backroom team. Will all this money be thrown into trying to get short term success with the Senior Team or do they have a long term plan for Meath football. Perhaps they should let people know. I am also reliably informed that Banty has now added Martin O' Connell to his backroom team (not first choice). Why at this late stage? Does this smack of a ploy to get his bid over the line. As regards managerial experience the Cooney team has intercounty managerial experience in both Meath (underage) and Offaly (Senior). Whereas Banty has well documented intercounty experience. Whatever decision is reached in the end I just hope that the long term future of meath football is a primary consideration

Royal Flush,
i also heard, very reliably that cooneys plan is to invole his team with the underage set up. on the money front, if the figure ive heard banty will require is correct, then its just not a runner, and not because its slightly too expensive, but because its totally unrealistic

Another twist this morning as banty plans to pull out.
Starting to look very silly & amateurish at this stage.

Well said Royal Flush.. its obvious the co board dont want Banty and are putting up every obstacle to prevent him, a month ago it was obvious Banty's team on paper was the best ticket but we all know this would be costly.

Why cant they make this information public or a least show the delagates the Business plan from both candidates, what is the point of a 3 man selection committee. Banty should just remove his name and make the co board look stupid again.. why is he hanging in so long.

Interested in what Cooney's plan is for underage as this is the real problem at the moment, Tyrone have nearly 20 full time coaches going around the schools and clubs to help with underage coaching, we have 3.. go figure who has the better chance of turning out a better teams for the future.

I dont know enough about each candidate to comment, but concerned at the number and frequency of movement of Banty's backroom team, that trainer and Grimley sure work the circuit which is not a good sign.

If you were hiring a person and the CV had 1 year here , next year somewhere else over 7-8 years.. the first question in my head would be why leave so often.. if so great why wouldnt the co boards hold onto them.
These guys are in it soley for one reason in my opinion and its not the love of Meath gaa.

My only regret in all of this is that the 3 man selection committee dont encourage and head hunt the right person for the job. For example a simple team would be Mick ODowd and Colm Brady along with one selector, but that would be way to smart.

I have answered my email, we should not give Banty or Conney the job and re open the position for new candidates. It's already too late to get new lads into the panel as there should be trails ongoing for the last month and a training program in place for last years panel.

Yes. I foresee another long and nationally embarrassing cock up coming from a county board that is more concerned with petty politics and in fighting then the health of Gaelic football in the county. I think if we were to go through the same circus as the last time we appointed a manager, heads will have to roll at the top table.
Also, when I heard this morning that Banty is ready to pull out, I had to ask myself is this the type of man we want for Meath. First sign that things are not going his way and he is out of here. What we need more then anything is a fighter

Men_of_49 ''Banty' was proposed for the job by the three-man committee who were given the task of finding Eamonn O'Brien's successor. However, there was opposition to their choice within the Management Committee.'' The 3man committee didnt as you put it,put forward two candidates.they put forward Banty.Jinxie and Finnerty's perm were on here weeks back harping on that the 3man committee wouldnt nominate the right man ie Banty, when they actually do recommend him,the 'management committee' decided against the recommendation.Hence the reason for the delay,I might just also like to add at conventions in the past there was votes taken for the managers job,why not now??The delegates got rid of the last manager, they now have two options let them cast the deciding vote and lets just get on with playing football.Meath football is in the news far too much for the wrong reasons.

Banty could quit Meath Race

http://www.rte.ie/sport/gaa/championship/2010/1103/mcenaneys.html

If this is the case it would be a disgrace. The meeting is postponed again its a bit of a joke to be honest theres a good man wanting to do the job but our county board will not get on with giving him the job.

For the sake of Meath football, and what could turn to be a decent generation, I hope Seamus hangs in there because if there is any sense in the selection process he will walk into the job.

What a shambles. How in Gods name will be ever be sucessful with this kind of shamble going on at the county board? Both candidates should pull out in protest.

boots96 & qprmeath,
the 3 man commettie was introduced to interview candidates and diecide which one THEY felt was the best, they were then to but the case to the management commettie as to why they felt he was the man for the job, the management commettie then had the choice to euther accept or decline said candidate. as it happens the managment commettie were not convinced by the case but forward and sought further clarification on certain details and so the 3 man panel have now gone and sought these details. in my book this is not a shambles, quite the opposite infact as the commettie wants to be absolutely sure they have the right man, is that such a bad thing? it is also my understanding that once the management commettie are happy with the candidate being put forward that it will then go to a vote of the club delegates so to ratify or reject the recommindation...

also northmeathman, ive heard that cooneys plan for underage is to have his coach available to all county underage teams and schools teams also, so i guess he'd be employed fulltime by the county.

Maradona, I really dont think it's anything to do with him being a fighter or not. This whole thing is becoming a farce just like it was 2 years ago, why should he stick around if there is so much indecision?

I agree with the previous comment about heads having to roll at the top table. Of course if they gave a proper explanation for the delay it might help, but as usual it's all a big mystery. They really could help their image alot more if they spoke to the media a bit more.

Finnertys Perm,
Meath desperately need a fighter in charge. What I mean by that is someone who will put the never say die attitude back into the county senior team. I feel that if Banty was really determined to get the job and really believed he was the man to bring Meath forward he would not be threatening to quit before he even got started. I know that it is very reasonable for him to be a bit disenchanted with the county board (he is not on his own there) but what we need is someone who believes in Meath enough to fight for the job. What I am reading into his intention to drop out is that he has an outsiders attitude that "this shower in Meath are more hassle then they are worth I cant be bothered. I'd just as soon go somewhere else. It makes no difference to me".
I never really believed he was the second coming but I am now more sceptical. Its a real shame we dont have any better options.

Frank What has happened in my opinion - We elect a commitee to pick the best candidate. At this stage you give them a criteria i.e. has to be a Meath man or not, has to be experienced or not etc etc etc. The commitee gives its verdict and you then go and reject it or defera decision as it now stands, making the commitee look stupid and the use of a commitee in the first place look pointless. Its not rocket science but we have a learned bunch at the top table who cant seem to make a decision. From the outside anyone of Meaths rivals for Leinster or All Ireland success must be delighted with the continual mess our county board makes of the simplest things.

So, according to the main page, McEneany has no intention of pulling out of the race to be the next Meath boss. Which means that the speculation in the media that he was going to pull out is the usual sort of Bull that the media spins out when they havent got a clue what is going on. Whilt it is not ideal by any means what is going on, I can see why there are problems and delays. Appointing an outside manager was always likely to be a contentious issue which would meet with opposition from some people. If the stories of the likely costs of appointing him are true, then it is going to be even more difficult to get it through. Trying to bully it through the management committee or the club delegates is only likely to cause more aggro. So if it takes another week or two to sort it out then so be it. The most important thing is to get someone that everyone (or at least most people) are happy with.
I think that if the selection committee and management committee are not 100% behind one candidate, then they should put both candidates before the club delegates and let them decide. I cant see a problem with that. But let the club delegates have all the information in terms of costs involved, coaching structures involved etc., Then no-one can complain with the decision the delegates make. If any of the candidates aren't happy with that, then sod them. Neither of them are that good that they can afford to be too bolshie about it.
