Replacing Eamon O'Brien - who should it be?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I think McEntee, Harnan & paddy Carr are all better options.

Really Jinxie? Why is that? I think the county board must get it right for a change,I have to say I would throw Dudley Farrell in the hat,I also haven't seen Skyrne play this year, what kind of management has Liam brought to them?

A good bet might be O'Brien again, now that would really put the cat amongst the pigeons.

"I also haven't seen Skyrne play this year, what kind of management has Liam brought to them?"

I guess the simple answer to that is: the kind of management that wins senior titles.

Having said that, its no guarantee that he would be a success at inter-county level. Plenty of mamagers have won county titles because they were in the right place at the right time, There is not that much of a difference between the top and the bottom at senior level (as Rathkenny showed last year and this). Sometimes things just click in a club - a group of decent players come together in a club at the same time, they decide to commit themselves fully, a bit of luck runs your way, the team stays injury free, other teams implode, and a half decent manager runs with it and wins a county title. Doesnt necessarily mean that theyare a great manager.

If you haven't seen Skryne play this year there is a fair chance that you haven't seen many games at all. After all most good supporters wouldn't miss their Senior county final. In that case from where do you get the credentials to suggest anyone for County Manager. You cannot seriously consider yourself a Meath supporter and miss the County Senior final. Thank God the managers job doesn't depend on the recommendations of posters on this page.

So it looks like we're down to four from the original thirteen - Seamus McEnaney, Eamonn Barry, Gerry Cooney and Pat Coyle. In my opinion, McEnaney is the outstanding candidate but, as we all know from experience with this county board, his appointment is by no means certain. I wonder has the selection committee approached anyone who was not nominated by the clubs? Dudley Farrell springs to mind.

That's a bit harsh,I haven't missed a Meath game in the championship for 15 years, plus I go to most O 'Byrne Cup and League Games,I was In Donegal last year for example, plus I have gone to 3 of the last 5 county finals and watch Ashbourne play a few times a year, and have often watched the Meath county champions play in Leinster,I would suggest their are posters giving opinions who are NOT dedicated than that, very un fair thing to say I love Meath football, only second to my girlfriend :)

In Fairness Gerry Cooney credientials are a little Eamonn O Brien -ish,hasn't managed lately,no county experience, played for Meath in the 70's and did win a county champ with Dunboyne in the mid-late 90's ,could be a little old fashioned ,he's in his 50's would have to learn hbow to manage at county level,we don't have time for that messing,Seamus has experience, great backroom team and better players to choose from..

My first choices would be O'Rourke or McEntee, but that can't happen..

Have heard that McCarthy that owns Navan shopping Centre is stumping up the cash to ensure Banty and Co. get the Meath Job. Hope it's right, Gerry Cooney and his selectors would be worse than Coyles bunch

MoinDearg - I'd be very surprised if that was true given the current climate. Even the more affluent are struggling at the moment so I doubt McCarthy or any other local businessmen have money to throw at Meath GAA. It's not even an investment as they wont see any financial return for it.

Another stagnation to follow if Cooney gets the job. Knowing our county board he probably will.

What is wrong with you lads
You would think the sun shone out of bantys backside the way you lads are going on.
Just would like to state a fact for you, under the amazing banty Monaghan failed to win
an ulster championships furthermore there efforts under his stewardship against kildare and tyrone
were dreadful.
Outsiders should not be welcomed into the meath fold its far too soccer for my liking

'Outsiders should not be welcomed into the Meath fold'

Nice to see such open-mindedness in 2010.

Nobody is saying the sun is shining out of Banty's backside Atta. It's all relative, people who are in favour of Banty are looking at what the alternative is - someone with no experience at the top level and a depressingly unambitious choice. But the co. board have been laying the ground for Cooney's appointment in the last week. It was interesting to note that the McEntee/Fay/Murtagh backroom set up only came to light in the last few days - why didn't we hear about them being part of his set-up from day one? To me, smacks of the Co Board suggesting that Cooney go out and get a few well-known faces on board to appease the people who were ridiculing the prospect of him getting the job.

Saying Banty never won an Ulster title is a bit cheap given the strength in the province. What he proved he could do was mould a mediocre-ish bunch of players into a hardened championship side who put it to (among others) a Kerry team at their peak on 2 occasions. I look at how Meath bowed out with a whimper at the first sign of a decent opponent the last few years & I really crave the appointment of a manager who will drag the preparation and attitude of Meath football into the 21st century. I don't care where he comes from.
