Cavan v Armagh SFC

I think Terry will stick by the team that played most of the League. The only surprise I could see is Killian Clarke at mid-field instead of Corr but I doubt it. They will need a bit of muscle around the middle with and to be honest Mossy has rarely let us down.

Scout, I think you might be fairly close to the starting 15. Maybe Alan in the goals and Jack if not injured up front. Dont know how Rory Dunne is shaping up?
The most important thing on Sunday is will we start converting all of our chances. For the last year or so we have kicked far too many wides and that is suicide in Championship football. Turnovers and conversion rates are so important in the modern game. If we play like in some of our League games eg Meath and Monaghan we will be there or thereabouts. But we have to play with huge enthusism and cut down the supply to Clarke in particular. I think Givney will win a lot of ball for us and with Corr doing the dirty work they can supply the forwards.
I hope Jason is the man to curb Clarke. It really is the crucial match-up and he is such a fine natural defender , fingers crossed he can do the job.
Would also love to see a huge game from Mackey! He is a great playmaker and again can break the tackles and give the dainty passes.
Expecting great things from Martin Dunne as well. He can be a match winner if he is up for it and more importantly if the right ball is supplied.
There is still a fair bit of experience in the team and allied to the youth of the u21's I think we can do it. It would be a massive lift to Cavan football and just think of the excitement it would create in the county.
So fingers crossed and come on lads and do your great county proud. The u21's have shown us the way.

Hope to see a good turnout on Sunday for the game. A win here would send out a message to every other county that Cavan football is on the rise. Very winable game so long as every man selected puts in 100%. CabhanAbu

Glad to see you all back again, yesterday was a bit quiet. Have you noticed that the minor thread hasn't had a post since 10th May? Strange.

Anyway, I'm sticking to the team I posted last week as my preference, but I'm interested in Shannon414's comment.

"given the conservative approach to team selection and a tendency to favour some players blindly"

I've noticed that with Terry too. It seems to take a long time for him to discard particular players who either lose form or don't develop from U21, and ignore other players who are on form. There are a few players who we all know will start on Sunday despite their ineffective form during the league, and/or the U21 campaign, because they played well two / three years ago? If a player visibly struggled to mark McBrearty at U21 level I fail to see how he can be given the key job of marking Clarke.

In this age of the professional approach to training and general team preparation, blind favouritism should be a thing of the past.

I worry about our full back line against Jamie Clarke. And even though he's a complete handful, Stefan Forker roasted us in the McKenna cup back in January, so they have the forwards to do serious damage. Question is, have we improved enough from the league to stop them? I think with young McLoughlin coming in and Flanagan we should have men capable of doing the job. Midfield, we'll win plenty of ball with Givney in there. This is his year to shine. Up front, Keating if he shows the same form he did in last years championship will cause all sorts of trouble. Armagh with the likes of Kernan and McKeever have big experienced fellas around the middle, we'll have to track Kernans runs as he's capable of scoring 1-2, 1-3 in any given game from half back.

Can't see T Hyland and Co make the same mistake again, too much rides on this game. Like posters on here I worry about FB line. Agree with ondforty Mc Loughlin while a great player did struggle to man mark against both Donegal and Cork I wonder about Killian Clarke for that role, but if he's needed in midfield. Wouldn't like to have to pick that team there's a lot of players of a type all around the same level. But T Hyland has a big panel of backs, K Clarke, O Minagh, K Brady J Hayes, J Mc Enroe R Flanagan J Mc Loughlin. All these are good markers and between the 3 that start in FB line and the others in other positions or on the bench we should have it covered. Armagh FF line will pack a serious punch but hope we can do it, love to win this one. Any truth Hayes was concussed at training on Sunday and was in hospital or is that like the Martin Dunne rumour?

Sergeant, neither Mckeever or Kernon are exceptionally tall though they are physically able! think loss of Mckiernan cancelled easily by their loss of not one but two midfielders namely Vernon and Toner. With those out i think cavan should control midfield! i believe we might see someone been given the duty of tracking kernon to limit his involvement in the game.

Ye, we have to concentrate just as much on Forker as we do on Jamie Clarke Both very dangerous . Also have to stop Keenan from running the show.

I expect a Jack Brady/Niall McDermott type player to follow kernan..Hes their main source from deep so if he can be stopped it wouldmake all the difference

Did McLoughlin struggle against Donegal and Cork?? Did very well on McBrearty for 50 minutes and was solid after a shaky opening v Cork. Considering both were far stronger physically than McLoughlin I thought he did very well. He's the best player we have, by a distance, to mark Clarke.

McLoughlin offers more than just man marking, he's clever on the ball and gets forward well. Maybe the best form of defence is to have him attack as much as possible, hopefully making Clarke follow him.

Jesus, Mcloughlin struggled on Clarke for 10 minutes on the best young footballer in Ireland and the geniuses on here think he is only being picked on past form. Some all stars have struggled on mcbrearty! Who would these clever boys put on him instead?

So thats the team as named last night lads. What ye all think?

Im sure as is terrys way there will be at least 1 change and about 3-4 positional changes, personally i would have liked to have seen corr, mckeever and mccutheon. 5 U21's bit much in my opinion. Big games needed from all these U21's and R.flanagan.
